Didnt really know where to put this.
Anyways.. next week we're going to look at a TONNE of horses. This breeder is selling off all her horses because she is retiring or something. She has about 40 of them... all babies. I am in the market for a baby, and hers are about what I want. All are unbroke (which is what my coach and I decided to go for.. yes.. more work, but then I don't have to undo any bad habits).
All of her horses are WB or WBxQh. I think most are Dutch WB crosses or Gelderlander crosses or something like that. I only know info on 3 of them, because those were the only thee advertised on the seller's website, and when I contacted her regarding on of them.. she told me there were actually a tonne more to look at.
The one that I KNOW I'm interested in seeing is going to be 16hh+, is Dutch x Gelderlander (Patrick on both sides and Avenir on his mum's side.. will post pics of them. I have not heard of these horses but they look nice..) He is a black gelding, and the lady has at lease 2 of his full brothers.. although the older one is sold and the younger is only a year old.
Anyways.. so here's my question...
WHAT should I be looking for in these babies? I know I can't try them or anything and I could really screw up and buy one that's not suitable.. and then we'll just have to sell and shop again. Ideally, we'd like something that is suitable as a hunter, and that I can either flip as a children's hunter in a few years, or that will end up being suitable as a 3'6 hunter that I can keep for a while and compete on.
I know that if I'm going to flip it as a children's hunter, I want a very sane, willing horse. Any idea on how to test these horses or get an idea for their personality? Obviously out of 40 horses I'm going to be picking based on conformation first... and then pick from those.
my coach is experienced so she'll help a tonne, I was just wondering if anyone has baby shopped before!
here's those two sire's I mentioned. The dappled is Patrick and the lighter grey is Avenir.
