No your not crazy... dont worry... I use to do it all the time to Domino down the riding school I use to help out at... and they still do it...
And if the flies like your horse... feeding your horse marmite sandwiches every morning can be useful... or your normal garlic...

I used sunscreen on my paints nose but it gets washed off fairly easy in the water buckets. The best thing I have found is fly masks with full nose gaurds. I used one called the gaurdian. stateline sells it relativly inexpensively.

most horses with pink noses need suncream
i tend to use sudocream though as i find it sticks better when in water

Everyone at my barn thought i was insane when i told them they needed to sunscreen their horses nose's. I, of course, was shocked that they'd never heard of it.
You're not crazy. =) I typically use SPF 55 on my western horse, but Indy doesn't need it.

One thing I've found with horses with pink noses is to keep them in during the day and have turnout at night. This also helps to keep their coats from bleaching in the sun. but if you can't do the turn out thing (i couldn't with one of my horses at the time) I but spf 50 sunblock on them with waterproof. that really helped alot!!!
