What is it you want? if you want a baby in general, decide what you really are looking for in a baby (ex, color, breed, etc.), then find one for sale. You don't have to wait 11 months! :)

Are you breeding for a purpose? or just for the experience of breeding and the fun of seeing a new life enter the world? There are foals being born on the stock trailers on the way to the slaughter houses. The last thing we need is more horses/ponies without specific purpose for being bred, it'll just add to our over population of horses in America. I believe that irresponsible breeders are active supporters of the slaughter houses here in the states. Unless you feel your hackney's are an exceptional example of the breed (great brain, great confirmation, great physical performance and blood lines) then you should not breed. Only breed if you feel that foal has a purpose and will be an asset to the breeds name itself.

i agree...
unless youre breeding a world class champion and youre sure it will make an actual contribution to the horse world, or youre breeding something that you are prepared to keep for the REST of its life, youre simply contributing to a larger problem...
i hate to be so cynical, but thats the sad truth of horse breeding today :/

Although that is VERY TRUE i just can't see someone not breding becase of others problem.. OF COURSE it needs to be cut WAY down and there ARE babies that need to be saved ex : PMU foals... and a TONE of horses rescued i still love having the babies and working with them and learning from experience. but yes unless the baby is either going to be kept forever and ever or sold to someone who will look after it or be like a champion then it MIGHHT be a better idea to buy. unless you wanna train it for yourself and everything. and if your two halflings are retired and you want more let's say if you wanna drive them or something especially if its a buisness by all means breeding is good cause you get to decide what your getting and you know the parents. i gues its rweally up to you. just make sure people think about all of the others in thw world :)

Beth---

Do not breed if only you just want a baby. What happens if you suddenly can't care for it? A sad truth, but many foals have lives like that. And that is very sad.

You could buy a foal instead, like others have said! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_1_13.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxpt211YYUS)That way, you will be helping a foal and you'll have a friend for life!

I agree on breeding if you are going to keep the foal and train it but people who breed for no reason in wrong. there is already too many horses that get slaughtered adn abused you would have to use it for a purpose.

ummm ok. so what's the purpose of you breeding the two? are you planning on raising a world champion, or what? and also what was the purpose of the post if you didn't listen to anything anyone said?.... basically there wasn't one from what i'm seeing. there are too many horses in need of a home, so unless you're a world champion breeding farm and trying to keep certain lines in a baby, you should adopt or rescue.

just my opinion.

Guys!! easy on the cinicalism (yea i know its not a real word)

beth is not going to solve the problem of horse overpopulation single handedly if she adopts instead of breeds. Shes also not signing a death sentence for ALL orphaned horses either.

It sounds like whats done is done so lets be happy for her.

I might breed my horse, after she is too old to run barrels or poles, it just depends on what i feel like doing afterward.

I really agree with Beth For Now. If you want to breed your mares, power to you. I breed horses and every single one of my foals that I do not keep go to excellent permanent homes. There is always a want for horses raised in family situations. Also your mares are not going to live for ever it would be nice to have a replacement later. Good luck. Love Penny and Casper
