View Full Version : Thrown out back. HELP!
So my younger sister called me and told me my horse, who is currently in Michigan while im at school in Indiana, threw his back out. Hopefully, the chiropractor will be able to fix it, but I was curious if anyone knows anything about what happens to the horse. How soon are they ridable again? Are there any long term health affects on the horse?
ANY info. is greatly appreciated!

I' m with Stargirl. I honestly never knew a horse could do that. Though I'm assuming if it's similar to a person, with some rest, he should be able to go back to work pretty soon, depending on the severity.
I believe my boyfriend and I are trailering up to see a chiropractor this weekend, but it's $80 for one visit, and an hour and a half drive. I think it's strange that no one else has ever heard about it. The farrier just said he thought it was out and we needed someone to pop it back in.
I'll keep everyone posted.

maybe it's out of alignment???
I think that maybe that's it. Not really sure. Im still really confused about it all. And entirely too frusterated by it. I googled it, but not too much info. came back for what i was looking for.

Awwww I hope your boy gets okay!!!
We found another, much closer, person that might be able to do it this weekend. (Thank goodness for amazing boyfriends that haul your horse around for free because you're broke and don't have a truck!) Apparently, it's a big business. They make between $80 and $150 per hour.
Anyone need a great profession? Haha.
I sure hope it's worth it though. Indy is not really much of a "people" horse. He was abused, so it's understandable, but im prayin he doesn't try to kill the poor guy. =)

"threw his back out" could mean that he reared or bucked in a certine way that snapped his back and it could just be soar, i would call my vet or ciropractor also. keep us posted an dgood luck! :o remember to use caution when trailering him, if he starins his back getting on and off, it could make it worse.
I think the cause of his back being hurt was an accident over the winter. He slid on some ice in the pasture and sprained his ankle to the point where he couldn't put any weight on his back right ankle. It's totally healed now, but i think maybe because he was walking funny for 2 weeks, it threw his back out.
Apparently they stand on a chair, push on the horses back and also pull their tails? I feel bad for the chircopractor. Indy's pretty moody about his tail since it was broken when he was little and never reset.
The big appintement is tomorrow, and im sooo nervous.

Let us know how it goes, hope he's okay. Alignment is pretty easy to fix, n humans, horses, dogs, everything. Won't take but a minute usually once the problem has been diagnosed, location wise and everything. Good luck!

My horse had a terrible accident and without his chairopractor I don't think he would be getting better. He pulled so many joints in the wrong direction and so many connective tissues were ripped that I've had him under a consistant chairopractor every 4 weeks for the last year. He's getting better SO much faster then anticipated. so no worries, after a bit of chairopractics your horse will feel much better in a couple days.
Well, all went well after we go Indy to stand still. He wasn't too enthralled with standing still while some strange man stood on two bales of hay and pushed around on his back.
His hips were out of alignment. Those were popped back "in" in a few minutes. His withers were "pointed" to the right, those were popped back. He cracked both his front legs, which made even my boyfriend cringe a bit, his neck was stiff and the chirco. cracked that. All in all, it went well and Indy seems to be feeling good now. I can't ride him until i go home again, so in 11 days.
I paid $65 for everything, and we were there for about 45 minutes.
What has everyone else paid for their visits?

he's probably just sore backed. my mare is like this also. nothing a trip to the chiropractor, some stretching, and corrective padding can't fix!

Good to hear that they were able to find what was wrong, as well as fixing it. What an amazing price for it, too!
