Sorry but I am not even remotely close to you but I can tell you what helped me get a job. I took lessons at a local stable but I made sure to stick around and help alot after my lesson or I would show up early and help out. Eventually, I started helping some of the boarders with their horses and the owner of the stable saw how interested I was so she offered me a job. She would also put my name out there any time someone was looking for someone to watch their horses while they were on vacation, exercise horses that are just standing around, or groom for shows. I don't know what your situation is in terms of whether you are taking lessons or not but hopefully this helps. I have also left my name and number at local feed and tack shops and sometimes you may get a call where someone needs help. Good luck. :D

Hi there! I'd suggest just doing a search for facilities in your area that have the types of trainers and riders you'd like to get involved with and phone them up and ask to come out and view the stables. From there you might find a lesson or lease horse option that could work into a working student position of some sorts.

Create your own job! :)

Hah, I'd love to work with horses too...but I just figure nobody will either hire me or it'll be too far away since I have no car. I volunteer at the stables, so I guess that's a start, but I'm guessing that if you REALLY want to get into it, not just for a summer job or whatever, you should take agriculture classes in high school and major in agriculture in college. Just a thought. But if you just want to do it for fun, exactly what the other people say.

But where I am, I'm having the hardest time getting a job, horse or otherwise. Therefore, I'm moving because I want to own a horse.

But it would be so cool to get paid to take care of horses. Then I'd get a job I actually like whereas teens usually get stuck doing the most boring jobs on the planet.

From what it sounds like, you may not have the appropriate knowledge to get a job, besides grooming, which you can get at any stable really, that you take lessons at. I used to groom at my lesson stable, and traveled to several shows to help out.

You need solid basics for most places, and being a native Georgian, the market here is tough to get into. Most places don't hire on the dot, like a working student position, because they want to see what you know and how reliable, trustworthy, etc. you are. There are also a lot of other teens looking into the same positions.

What area of Georgia are you in? Do you currently ride somewhere?

I'm also in Georgia.

If you are serious about getting a job you need to start at the bottom and work your way up. You are inexperienced around horses and no respectable barn will let you exercise or probably handle their horses. This is not a bad thing, everyone has to start somewhere. Look for a barn where you can help muck, feed, and water, and in exchange you can watch in on lessons and possibly work off lessons.
If you are dedicated, polite, and a hard worker you will develop a good reputation. Over time a barn manager will be more likely to give you that extra lesson or let you help with certain things if he/she knows that you really want to learn and improve.
www.stablemates.com , www.ghja.com , www.gahorse.com , http://horse-talk.com/Georgia.html , and http://www.polocenter.com/stable/stableusga.htm are websites that list barns in need of help or those that give lessons. Don't be afraid to email or call these people and see if they are hiring a stablehand. Even if they are not, most are more than happy to give you the number of someone who could use an extra hand.
Good luck
