They have to have some sort of gait whether it be trot, pace, rack, running walk. That's all they can do, whether it be taught or not. So what I wanna know is what exactly does he do??

i'll get pictures either tomorrow or thursday when i go out to the farm.

Smokey, though he is a walking horse, trots like a regular horse. I have gotten him to do the running walk (which is a faster walk and almost a trot and really smooth). As for discipline, he is a trail horse, but with some work and training, he would make a good jumper or even a western pleasure horse.

and Smokey doesn't pace or rack, he will sometimes go into the running walk. He trots, which is not a walking horse gait. Horses have to have certain muscles to pace/rack/do the running walk, so I'm trying to build up his muscles at the running walk right now.

OK I was wondering b/c I train Walkers. So the first thing you need to do to get these horses to gait is to make sure that they're shod right. They can't be shod like a flat gaited horse b/c they move different, and breed different. So my suggestion is to make sure you have the right angles for them. If they're trotty then they need "trailer shoes" on their back feet allowing their rear to swing. Also make sure you have the right bit for them too. What are you using on them? Also when riding them you need to make sure that they are collected. Don't ride them with a lose rein. So collect them up and push them forward with your legs and seat. This should help them gait a lil better. Another thing they might need is a little weight on their front. This tends to help too. Try these things as let me know how it goes. Also I would be interested in what bit they're using as well as the shoeing set up.

we keep the horses barefoot. I am using a walking horse bit. I'll try those things next time I'm out at my farm and I ride him.
