Hey everyone,
tonight at the barn, I noticed a sore on each side of Star's mouth, on the underside of her top lip. These are new, (not from the bit, too far down). I have no idea what she could've done, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any kind of medicine I can put on them to make her feel better? Since they're inside her mouth, I can't put standard ointment on them, so I'm looking for something that is safe if she were to swallow it. Thanks.

Try baby ambisol(sp?) if it seems to be painful. this will numb the pain. Other than that without asking the vet I have no idea. Hope this helps!

Has she recently had her teeth floated? If her teeth are sharp, they could be rubbing on her lip, and cutting them, causing the sores. I also read that trapped pieces of hay or grain can develop abcesses in a horse's mouth, but that's not likely on both sides.

I really am not sure of what is safe for your horses mouth, and I don't want to suggest anything that could be potentially harmful. You should just call up your vet, I'm sure they could just tell you over the phone.

I hope Star feels better soon. Keep us updated.

Thanks everyone. my vet had a look at her teeth in March and said they looked great, and wouldn't need to be floated for awhile (December to be exact). I don't think it's her teeth, I took a glance at them, so I think I'll just give my vet a call later today.

Manda, I'll tell Star you hope she feels better.lol. :)

Again, thanks for the help everyone.

Is there something in the pasture where she grazes that could have caused these? Are there fence posts, i know a few horses that chew on wood when there bored and they get little cuts on there lips and little sores. Do you ride her western or english?

No, she doesn't chew on the fence posts.... what's my riding her got to do with her mouth? Western for the record...like I said, it's not the bit, it's nowhere near where the bit lies...

Edited to add that I don't think it's anything in the pasture out of the ordinary...

Thanks.

Only trying to help but sometimes in english riding people use a flash noseband which puts sores on the insides of the lips if done too tight or if the horse resists. sorry.

Oh I know, you're helping! I'm a western rider so I had no clue why you were asking about the style I ride.lol. I didn't mean anything by my answer, don't be sorry! I'm just confused, I don't like things like this happening and having no clue as to what is doing it... :o
