View Full Version : My Horse Fell
My horse fell today! We were loping through our arena and she started to speed up and when I was in the middle of saying whoa (she always stops) she went down and she didn't even stumble she just tripped and went down on her right side so as she was falling I just jumped as far away from her as I could (good thing to to because if I didn't she would have landed on my ankle) we're all fine though it was sandy in that spot luckily.Has anybody had this happen to them?

that's not normal....
Either you horse has coordination issues or you were going much much too fast and your horse couldn't balance.
I've had ridden countless trips, stumbles, etc at all gait, before, and after jumps and I've never had a horse go down on their side.
If she seem a little off in her gait or personality in the following days I would strongly recommend having a vet out to look at her.

maybe your horse spooked or something...and...lost balance ...its happened to me before
I don't think so I know she carries her front legs close together I think that might be it.

No not to me.
it's possible you see the fence was next to us (on the left) and when she went down her head went in the direction of the fence she fell to her right side and I jumped out of the stirrups forward (then I spent 2 hrs. cleaning my saddle of sand)

I've had something similar happen to me.
I was riding the Appendix I was leasing at the time, and we were cantering around the arena, and all of a sudden he just went down and I went flying over his head. He was fine afterwards, but he had coordination issues, we all knew that. It was a one time thing though.
The fall did hurt my confidence a bit though.
I'm glad you and your horse are alright.

Excuse me?
Please use your eyes and read. No where did I call you a liar or say that it "didn't happen". I simply stated that it is unusal for a horse to fall down on their side like that and if he acts abnormal in the following days you should consult a vet.
Next time take your time to read the post thoroughly because I'd rather not waste my time responding if I'm going to get called a liar.

I think Maxie poo was kidding. The grinning smiley makes it look like it.
(If he was, *somebody* is a little overly sensitive...if not..yeah, oh well...just saying)

Haha that happened to my friend last week. Her mare tripped on the wet sand, and they both went down. She had a broken arm to begin with, and thankfully she didn't hurt herself any further.

I've never had a horse go onto its side - except after he tripped over a jump, flung me into the next fence, and fell sideways in order to mostly miss me- but I've had some go down on their knees (all school horses).
I agree with Silver. Also bad leg conformation can cause horses to trip more, or if they misjudge distance or something. Of course it could have been a fluke.
At least you're both okay, that's a good thing. Maybe check the arena for things she could have lost her balance on.

My pony, long ago, did that. She and I were just trotting through the field and then all of a sudden she was on her side and my foot was caught under her. It was uncertain why she tripped though I think we caught a gopher hole. My foot was broken so I didn't investigate because I was in horrible pain.
I would think that if she's acting normal then she may have just not been watching where she was going and just tripped over her own feet and overbalanced, hell I do that myself, lol! Was she extremely hot? I've heard in a few cases that sometimes they can get a slight touch of heat exhaustion and they'll stumble and fall. Now, please don't take that as a mean remake...in this weather, it's easy to get overheated.

Well, she may have just gotten slightly overheated. I faint if I get too hot so I think it would be possible for our fourlegged friends to do the same. Perhaps try to find an electrolyte supplement to give her before you ride her in really warm weather. That will boost her ability to sweat and cool herself off. Worth a shot I supposed.=)

Horses can have clutsy moments just like people. Just like babies trip over their own feet sometimes when they are being broke. Maybe she was just having a spacy moment and forgot to pick up her feet. I know I've done that a couple times  :D

Lol who hasn't? I walk into doors and walls regularly. And fall alot. I was originally known as the clutz, but now I'm the ditz cause I have blonde moments too...lol...
Maybe that's all it was. A clutzy/bonde moment. But still check to see if theres anything she fell over or give her electrolytes or whatever (that was a really good idea btw)

I have a Tennessee Walker/Arabian (Beau) who used to fall constantly. I never could figure out why. We took him to the vet to get him tested for EPM, thank god he didn't have it, but that is one of the symptoms. another thing, it could just be that she was refusing to slow down when you asked her, she got her signals all mixed up and just went KAPUT! When Beau did it, it was either at a trot or lope; I would ask him to stop and he would just kind of fall forwards onto the front of his shoulder and then flop to his side. thankfully he never hurt me. it all happened so fast I was never able to get away before he hit the ground. we had a chiropractor come out and fiddle with him for a while and now he's just fine... how well does she engage her hind quarters? a balance issue could also be the culprit... just a couple words of advise and a heads up... I hope it was just an accident on her part, REMEMBER GUYS, HORSES AREN'T PERFECT!!! some people think humans are, but I have proof that we aren't!!! haha, read my profile!!!!!

I was at a show last year watching one of the jumping classes, where they jump as many times as they can in a certain time, and this girl was galloping her horse around a turn (dunno why, she was being kinda stupid in my opinion) and the turn was too sharp, and the horse flipped, she went flying and the horse landed on its side....luckily, the horse was okay...the girl got an earful from her trainer and mom, though, for galloping.....
Is your mare okay, Max?

I have a good story...
so i had a fun lesson .. we were working on balance and concentrating on other things rather than "omg jump must jump!"
so my trainer had us jump without reins
and then with our eyes closed
that was so much fun
and i never had trused my horse more than jumping wiht my eyes closed
so then she had me look up as far as my head could go
and jump a verticle
all was goign well until ...
well I couldnt really see what was gong on
but my horse tripped and fell on my leg
and he stayed on the ground for awhile , making sure he would hurt me if he got up.
but it didnt hurt at all, my horse was fine.. we were lucky
my saddle had a minor scratch but ill talke that over a broken leg! =D

My friends horse did that once when we were riding. I almost had it on video too but I just turned it off. She was working on simple lead changes and he cut the corner a bit to sharply and just feel over. It happens, they loose there footing and just flop I guess. I've never been on a horse thats done that, thank god. Hope you and your horse are both good!

Max forgot to mention Tamira has joint issues on her right front. She has been checked and we use Max4 to increase the sinovial fluid. She also has a tendency toward being sassy and gets fooling around when she should be paying attention. Then again sometimes s**t just happens :-)

Ahh... that's kinda scary... I was standing with my pony one time, and all the sudden she started to lie-down (sp??) and it was soosoo scary because I didn't know what was happening. And my new horsie cut's his corners soooso bad (we're working on that... lol) and leans in, that after like a 3' vertical he almost fell because he was leaning in so bad, and i almost thought that he was bucking (lol) because he put his head really far down, and then he scared himself so he went galloping down the long wall sooososoooo fast and it was so scary! Then I halted him right in-front of the fence! He was okay after that, but that was scary!
But ur horse is okay?

one time in a schooling ring the night before a show my [previous horse] mare came off a diagonal line, perfectly i might add, lol, and we were going to turn the corner, when out of freaking no where, literally, this lady [on a horse] walks right along the rail from the gate [i was looking where i was going, too; she just popped right in there in a split second it seemed]. i was going left, which meant i should have been on the outside, but she was completely in my way, and i had no where to go. so i tried to turn her really sharply, but the ground underneath the sand was still a bit wet from rain a few days earlier, and she just could not do it. i was basically asking her to do a complete 180 turn in about 3 or 4 ft before we crashed into this lady, and finally the lady tries to move but my mare completely fell down on her side. her legs just slipped out from under her.
i thought for sure my left leg was going to be completely flattened. but somehow she held herself up long enough for me to get my leg out and the other one off and i rolled away. i hit the ground on my shoulder really hard, though. my head was ringing for a while from the impact my helmet made, too. i think i had a mild concussion, lol. but after a few hours i was better and the next day i went and showed and we were awesome =D it didn't really scare me too much, but i am always careful in corners in schoolings rings now, more so than ever. that was the only time i ever came off that horse! hehe. and i just realized, i've never fallen off to the right; i always come off to the left, haha.

Wow ashleygoesrawr...i'd be soo mad lol. I hate when rings are crazy like that lol. Especially when riders don't care when they cut you off or whatever lol.
And hey, I only fall off to the left as well. Lol ^^
