So some of you already know that I am looking for a new horse, both as a project for me and a riding horse for my mom since Breezy is supposed to be retiring this year. This horse is currently at the top of my list. He's a 7 year old Quarter Horse, 15HH, and kid safe. The owners are asking $2000 for him, but will do $500 cash and some tack in trade. Does this sound like a good deal to you? let me know what you think!!!
EDIT:I plan to get a vet out there to check him out. They've sent quite a few pictures of people riding him, the only problem is they were uploaded in a format that CC wont allow to show... bummer... He's unregistered, so that's another reason for the price being so low. Plus, you guys know how slow the horse market is, I'll bet these people are pretty desperate to find a good home before they have to pay next months board... trust me, I'm not stupid enough to buy a horse sight unseen. I'll probably go out 3X just to see if he is consistent in his behavior and health. I'm a pretty picky person and there's quite a bit more to the story, I'm just showing you the nutshell part... I like him though...
I know I posted this already, but I know some people (including me) like to skip to the end and post, so I thought I'd get these details cleared up so you all can know what the situation is...

Nice looking horse, but please get him vet-checked first. There looks to be a scar on his front left fore, in the first pic...I'd be wondering why they are willing to take $1500 less than their asking price, even with tack...he's a looker, though!

Yah, he's really cute but I'd get him vetted first because you don't want a horse that's not sound. wats his name?

The woman says he's completely and totally sound that that he has had no previous injuries in his past. It could just be a trick of the light. His name will have to change, it's PW... I don't know who in their right mind would name a horse PW!

Oh, and as for the price seeming kind of fishy, it's just a mother and daughter how have too many horses and not enough time. They said the price is negotiable to the right family. Plus I have enough tack to trade to equal about $750...

Mmmmm ... even then. I would [personally] get a vet to look at him. A solid QH gelding, who is 'sound' only for $2000 is fine ... but dropping down to $500? That seems very odd. Just because she says he's sound, doesn't mean he is. I would get him checked out.
He's very nice though, I love his face. =D

the second horse on my list is a 2 year old bay gelding who's owners are selling (unregistered and unbroke, but handled extensively) for best offer... $500 is what I'd pay... I'd go out to see this boy if the chestnut falls through.

so my new question is... which one would be a better deal? the unbroke 2 year old for $500 or the broke 7 year old with the price situation... I can train the unbroke gelding, but then we could immediately start showing the other one in halter (he's so purty)... both are currently the same height, but the bay will be taller because he is appendix and still young and growing. I'm kind of torn now, because they are both really nice horses, both reasonably priced (assuming the woman owning the chestnut is sincere) and both are exactly what I have been looking for! ack, help!

Well, it sort of depends what you want. You said it was a project, right? The colt would be a good project, but if something goes wrong it would be harder to fix than with the chestnut. I would go with the chestnut, because I don't have the patience to train a two year old. lol But that's just me. =P
They are both STUNNING. So you just really have to ask yourself if you want to show or break? ^^

It started out as a project when I sold Woody, but now it's more of finding a replacement for Breezy. My mom doesn't feel comfortable on our half arabs, and I personally don't blame her, she's a larger woman and they are pretty narrow. I love the chestnuts build, it's ideal for just about anything (he would do VERY well in the halter classes around here!) but then the bay is going to be taller and wider... hmmm, I'm starting to like the bay. but I'm not going to let ground manners deceive me, Cynder (my sisters mare) has the most WONDERFUL ground manners and sweetest disposition on the ground, but once you put a saddle on her all she can think is GO GO GO!!! HMMM

lol That's a tough one. Which one does your mom prefer? Maybe ask her for what she wants in a horse. Then you can see which one will suit her better.

I'd go with the chestnut, personally...you said you're looking for a replacement horse for the one you're retiring, right? The chestnut is ready to show and ride, the bay needs time for his knees to close before getting extensive work (I think I said that right...)

The market for horses has taken a dramatic dip recently (been around enough to see a few of them, economy worries are behind this one). I wouldn't worry overmuch about the price, corn is high ($$) and alot of people are trying to get rid of mouths they can't feed.
They are both gorgeous!! You will be hard pressed to make up your mind. I would chose personality over looks, but they are both pretty! Go with the one who seems to 'connect' with you, or if you are getting them for someone else, take them and see which one 'connects' with them.
I would rather train 20 untrained green horses and wait to ride than have to retrain 1 'sour' one.....
Good luck, and brightest of blessings!!

Here is a copy of what she has said so far... minus a little
He is 7 yr old quarter horse gelding, very gentle been to clinics, we actually had a very timid 8 yr old ride him a couple weeks ago and he took great care of her, he has a very nice head, no vices and easy to handle
I have an asking price of 2000 on him but that is negotiable to the right
home so I would be more than willing to accept $500 cash and tack if I
think its the home for him as he is a special horse...
that's just a couple things she has said about him, the other parts I have already told you (about not wanting to pay board next month...) He is about 3 hours away... do any of you recommend a horse trailering business? I've never used one (never had a reason to) and don't know much about them... About how much does it run for 3 hours or does it go by the mile, if so, it's about 200 miles... (I'm in Oregon, so if any of you know of any respectable trailering businesses that would be nice to know before we decide to buy him and then have no way of getting him home, lol)

it may be the racehorse training in me, but have a good look at the legs on the bay- the right front tendon looks to be bowed- maybe its the light but it doesnt look so hot.if i were you id go check out the chestnut, and if you guys like him, get him vetted. sounds like a better deal. i dont know how the market is around you, but here you can get horses CHEAP. registered or not. unpapered greenies you can get for a couple hundred bucks. ;)

well, the owner has given the all clear and no worries about bringing a vet along! She says he has NEVER had a problem with health and he trailers really well (we wont buy a horse that wont trailer, that is a HUGE factor in pre-purchase requirements).. and again, ANY information about transportation companies is gladly appreciated!!!

We are going to see the chestnut first... We are gonna try to get him, but if for some odd reason it falls through then we will go out to see the bay... or there's a horse rescue around here with a sweet 2 year old black and white tobiano mare that I really like, the only problem is they are basing their adoption fee on her bloodlines and the fact that she "can" be registered... she isn't even halter broke, but she has a lot of potential. The reason we are looking at 2 year olds (if you hadn't noticed the pattern) is because they are what's out there in our price range... wish us luck!!! AND YET AGAIN, TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION!!!

Too bad you can't afford all three! That would be cool, huh? Then you wouldn't have to choose. =)

love the head.
and if he's kid-safe he's more than likely willing to learn, so you could probably teach him a lot.

so I went to see PEEWEE (the chestnut gelding) yesterday and rode him and he was WONDERFUL!!! He passed the vet check and he is EXACTLY what we are looking for! The woman kept apologizing for him being so hyper and he was being really good, which means he is going to make an awesome all-arounder... I liked how he just took everything in stride... I am going to go outside and clean my saddles and take pics and let her choose which ones she likes best. I'm so excited!

well thank you SKIP!!! PEEWEE NEEDS MORE CARROTS! HE'S STAAAARRRVING! LOL. also, he needs a new name, but I don't want it to sound too different from the original, any ideas? I was thinking Petey, but that's a little too human for him. hmmm

But I'm sorry, no name ideas. =/ Wish I could help, but if I tried, I'd give you dumb ideas. I have some good names but none sounding like peewee.

Dawn of the Peewee (I know, I'm silly...but that just came to me)
Petey Peterson
Pierson the Buck
Calling all Pemees
Hide Nor Hair (just came up with this name...can be Hyde Nor Hair or whatever if you like sound but not spelling...)
Don't Pee on me (just a joke!!! Haha, sorry, I have a lame sense of humor)
The Chestnut Named Peewee
I like Akamacabar, which I kinda made up but is probably a real name...It sounds so catchy to me, but idk if that's a name for your chestnut.
I hope ONE of my names helps a little...but if they are all dumb, I'm sorry!
