View Full Version : Lazy
Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone knew any solutions or ideas for my horse Timira. Well, my horse Timira is lazy under saddle. It's not that she doesn't do what I ask her, it's that she doesn't give me all her energy when I ask her to do it.I've tried a get down rope a crop and spurrs I even tried jumping off my saddle and making her do it but nothing is working, I've done all my groundwork, any suggestions?

well, as you might know, Shaz is pretty lazy, and the fact that he's an arab may help your situation. if you have access to a round pen, I would suggest putting ground poles down. I did that for about 30 minutes each time I rode Shaz and he got pretty spunky. it's because they have to use energy and concentration when going over them. anyways, all I know is it builds their energy. also, lunging. just have her warm up going both ways and have her lope for about 2 minutes both ways. for some reason, when I lunge Shaz it seems to put the spunk into him, whereas when QH people lunge it's to take it out. weird, I know. I hope this helps...

Well I have a superrrrrrrrrrrrr lazy horse also, and what I do is whenever I'm trotting, I post and then sit and spur and whenever i'm cantering, every other stride I spur my horse and that seems to be helping a lot.
ya if you want to make your horse dead sided.... have fun with that
Your horse needs a wake up call, a squeeze means go now, not go when you feel like it. Start at the walk and transition to a trot. Squeeze and if you dont get an automatic prompt transition, give a HARD smack. He'll probably jump forward and speed around at the trot, just stay with him and gradually bring him down to a walk. Ask for the trot again, a soft squeeze and if he doesn't give you the transition SMACK.
Horses are smart, it should only take him 1-3 times before he learns that he better move off of your leg or else he gets smacked. The same theory applies to lateral movement (although a dressage whip tends to work better because you can really isolate the shoulder or hindquarters).
You don't want to make your horse jumpy or fear your crop but he must respect your legs. When his upward transitions and his transitions inside of his gaits improve I think you will find he is much more willing to move forward when doing more complicated things.

I would use a crop. I used a crop on my lazy mare and man she was moving. She has never done it since!

that's the thing she doesn't really care about the wack on the butt with the get down rope, and she knows when I have the crop.As for spurrs she just gets pissy

My horse used to be scared of the crop but a barn rider introduced it to her and know she knows when you have a crop you have to move!

i completely agree, my horse shadow is realllly lazy, but i found that transitions do alotttt for the lazy bum, and i agree w/ the crop too, but if u want to make ur horse light, then use the slighest squeeze(believe it or not ur horse can feeel it  i know "shocker" isnt it..lol)then go to a harder squeeze, then WHACK, it works and u will eventually be able to ride w/ out the crop becuase u give ur horse two cues to go instead of just one then whack, it helps him to adjust, or riding w/ out the crop will become very tiresome...i know...haha, so slight squeeze, harder squeeze, then whack
P.S- after u get the trot, go until u feel ur horse starting to slow then pull him back so he thinks u stopped him, cuz if he thinks he can stop any ol' jolly time, then he will, u have to be the one to tell him when to stop and when to go...good luck...tell us how it goes :D
