Today I was lunging my horse. This horse sat in a pasture for eight years just to let you know. Okay so I was lunging and all of a sudden she wanted to stop. So i picked up my lungle whip and poped her in the side. But She moved foward. I was afraid she would hurt me. I got her going and then she did it again!! So I was really getting mad a frustrated at her! I just need some advice on how to solve this. Yes before anybody says it I do have a trainer but for riding only. I just need advice to help me.
Thanks!

I would suggest asking Patrica, you could also try to use traning reins... if you want you can borrow mine!! I tryed that with Tia and it really makes her focus, and listen to me! Hope this helps!!

My mom won't pay for a lunging lesson. Montana could care less about training reins. Do you have to have like a harness for them??

When he/she comes into you, 'push' her out with the whip. (basically just tap-not hit-her with the whip on the shoulder.)
if she doesn't respond tell her to stop & back. then start the circle over again. she'll eventually get the hint. if not, try getting someone else to walk her around in circles 'till her memory comes back.

Or you could build a round pin...

Okay that may help. The only thing is that when you tap her with the whip she throws her head up and acts like she is going to rear almost. I'll take your advice! Thanks!

When Montana gets in your space, I would suggest getting a leadrope and cliping it to the halter and make her back at of your space ( acouple steps backwerd). If she dosn't respond with you shaking the leadrope use a crop and tap her on the shoulder. My mom's old horse use to be really really pushy but that fixed the problem! :D

Yeah but she doesn't really respect the lunge whip but when you are riding her she will respect the whip. I guess she knows she is bigger and stronger than me. I'll just have to work on it I guess.

If she dosn't listen to you taping the wip on her shoulder, tap it harder ( not like a threating hit) just so she will wake up and listen to you.
DixieGirl
09-26-2007, 06:53 PM
Then she'll try to act like she will charge you!

If you want you can borrow my Clton Anderson halter. If you put that on her she wont even think of the word *charge*!!

That would probally work because she reponeded alot to pressure.

Round work is very beneficial for a building a leadership relationship with your animal but if one isn't available to you perhaps use a surcingle and some long lines. Work her with her bridle so she'll think it's a riding session. Have them set up like reins, though one will come around her butt and then the other will be on the inside. When she goes to come in on you, pull slightly on your outside rein so she'll know to stay in a wider circle. I hope that made sense, lol! I worked with Gambit like this his first couple times with great result, though we didn't use a bridle because he was a youngen.
Good luck with everything!

Shaz was taught that when you stepped toward his front end or stood still facing him he should stop. It means he's paying attention to me. Montana could be doing the same thing. Try to face her rear end and drive her forward. She could just be trying to play fresh because she isn't worked often. Walk in a circle with the whip in the hand that's farthest behind her and act as if you are using long reins (but you're not, you are kind of just walking behind and closer to the inside of the circle.) Does this make any sense? :o

Okay! Thanks everyone..I'll try that tommorrow because I already worked her today.

even if she does rear still use the whip, try to put as much pressure as u can on her(look her in the eye, stand tall, shoulders square, use the whip dont abuse it, tap her on the neck, if she rears and u r out of the way then tap her again), do all of this or only as much as needed to get her to move, the minute she moves, release all the pressure(look at the ground, point the whip towards the ground, but still face her rear end so she knows to keep going), and also dont try any of this if ur horse doesnt respect ur personal boundaries, she should not even come in close enough for u to tough her unless u ask for it....good luck

First of all dont become frustrated and scared because that will just transfer to the horse. If the horse stops crack the whip behind them without creating contact. If the horse were to miss behave dont say anything to the horse because any kind of aknolegement would be good for the horse. Just keep asking and once the horse does it correctly then reward the horse saying good boy/girl.
Just remember to stay calm and collected the whole time and dont loose your cool.
I also agree with horsesxox23. :)
I wish you the best of luck

I wouldn't lunge her with a bridle or bit her up until she goes back into lunging again. If she is still doing it try lunging her on a lunge line in a round pen with two people this is how I teach my foals to lunge. Lunge her like you normally would with a lunge whip except have one person on the outside or inside leading until she becomes comfortable with forward movement again. You have to establish that forward movement before confining them with being bitted down. I hope this helps a little. ;)

I wouldn't ride a horse that doesn't respect me on the ground. She may be a doll, but there could be a time when she just wont listen to you because she knows she can get away with it. Keep working on the lunging (always end on a good note) and ride if and only when she was good on the lunge line. None of us want to see you get hurt.

ok ok! haha, I just wanted to make sure, you just never know. just keep driving her forward and have someone lead her in the circle so she is reminded of what she was supposed to do.

I decided I'm not going to lunge her anymore because it's just to much work and nobody will help me because they are busy. So I just play games with her ect.

I was having the same problem with my horse and my friend's instructor helped me fix it. Spice kept trying to get into "my bubble" so what he did was when she tried to get into "his bubble" he took "her bubble" away by taking up on the lunge line and making her do a tiny circle. When he took her bubble away she wanted it back therefore, she moved back onto the rail. He made her keep trotting the whole time and after about 3 circles without her bubble she was practically begging to get her bubble back.

But you see..she can get right up to you and you can tap and hit her as hard as you want and she won't care one bit!

I would recommend getting some video's that help with ground training. If you are unable to pay for a lesson, this would be a good way to improve your handling skills. It sounds like she needs some basic ground work so she can learn the correct response to the aids. Do some research for good instructional videos and study up. If she stood in a pasture for eight years she is probably a little rusty!

Pat Parelli's method of ground training would be fantastic for your horse. If you can go and watch one of his clinics, or I am sure he has books and videos.

I went to one of his clinics very recentally. I looked at the videos and they where price wise...THROUGH THE ROOF!!!. I wasn't going to pay $219 for a video st on that perticualr thing.

That is why I HATE trainers, mostly they are about money. If you have money then they can fix ANYTHING for you. I went to a Clinton Anderson clinic at the Oregon Horse Expo. and I actually got to meet him. I asked him if he had any advice on my arab/walker, Beau, because he had a stumbling problem. Clinton advised me to buy all of his videos and see if they helped... YEAH RIGHT DUDE! I'm not going to spend $100 a pop for a video just to SEE if it corrects my problem! I would like to meet an honest trainer who cares more about the horse than the money. I would like to walk up to a big time trainer, tell him my problem, and have him give me an idea that will help. I understand they are busy, but mostly they are busy with the rich peoples' horses to even notice that the poor people are the ones with the nasty ones because they cant afford a trainer! AAACCCKKK!!!!!! Sorry, I really had to get that out. Don't try and argue with me, that's my experience and I don't want to be told that I am over-reacting.

I would always keep the whip towards her honches, And if she stops cluck or snap the whip, but do not hit her. Good Luck Taylor. :)

She doesn't listen to that either. The whip means nothing to her whats so ever. I'll just keep working with her.
