Idk much about it, but since you sometimes have to put them in pens (?) I'd work near and around gates.
I'd also work with your horse's ability to stop and turn quickly. That's important in almost any cow-horse event

:] some good excersices you can do with your horse, maybe to get him moving quicker off of your LEG and not just your hand is do roll backs into the fence. at a walk jog and lope, and progress to each one as your horse is getting better, sometimes you can get up to the lope in just one day, sometimes it'll take weeks. also, do alot of backing up, pivoting, and loping off. these are things that get your horse intune to you, which is needed in such event

to have a better response, you should wear a spur, even if it's just a ball or english spur, nothing that wont hurt him, it will only make the que more clear to him. your horse should NEVER rely only on hand , but mostly on leg, especially in events like that. def. take lessons from someone that is extremely experienced in it :]

otherwise, GOOD LUCK!

thanx... what i usually work on is first i walk down the wall the do a rollback onto the wall then walk to other way then when i roll back the other direction i trot and then canter

i get good respnses andi can do them in the middle on the arena too so its not just the wall that she is listening to... i also practice quick changes in gaits.. hind quarter step over front quarter step over, side pass, turning on seat comands( with ur seat and with leg), i also am starting the bigigning stages of neck reining, and spins, i also practice the slide stop with seat comands, then verbal the rein, thank u for the idea of a spur but my horse is so reposnsive that i don't really need one, and if i do they are always handy, i practiced with them once or twice so i make sure my horse isin't jumpy about then rolling up her sides and gently poking her sides :D

just watch out if there are any bulls, thats if your doing ranch cutting with a big herd, my dad has had his leg gored several times. and also the saddle horn, that sucker hurts when your horse makes an unexpected turn or stop so dont lean forward stay back and parrellel
