How do you take care of your show horse's tail  ? I'm looking for a good way to keep it from breaking and stuff. So far I've just been braiding it and wrapping it up in Vetrap. I've also been using tons of leave-in conditioner but it is still getting dry and breaking :( . Are those three-peice bags any good?

I just treated and bagged Regal's tail today. I waited until all the flies were pretty much all dead since I feel bad bagging otherwise.

In the summer I apply MTG to the roots once or twice a week, and massage into the rest of the tail this stuff called "Lustrasilk Alovera Cholesterol" it's like lotion for hair- it's under $3 in the "black hair" section of walmart and really works at moisturizing. (Just dont put it on the roots- I learned the hard way that can make them rub!)

I tried something different conditioning today and I was really impressed with the immediate results. I had an arab person telling me about soaking the end of the tail in hot oil. I thought "great, but who keeps hot oil around?" :p Well at Target the other day I stumbled across suave hot oil treatments- little vials of oil you soak in HOT water, then break open and massage into hair. I bought a pack (it was cheap! a bonus!) and used a vial today and I was SO impressed. The brittle ends of his tail were SO smooth and flexible afterwards.

I let him dry and bagged it in a three tube bag. Got my fingers crossed he's not going to fuss about it and rub. :o

I do think the 3 tube bags work better. When you braid hair-on-hair, the friction is more likely to make hairs break.

You can also try putting a quarter cup of vegetable or corn oil in their feed each feeding. It might take a week or so to get into their system. My Vet told me about it. It makes their coat, mane, and tail very shining and slick all year round. There is also this stuff called Cowboy Magic that works great! Good Luck! :)

I know, I love Cowboy Magic! Works wonders, the only downside is that it smells like a port-a-potty. I like my Straight Arrow Mane & Tail conditioner cause you don't have to runse it out, it just dries and doesn't irritate skin. And it smells good. It's holding the tail together so far... :)

Anything will work, really. Horse shampoo or average fragrance free human shampoo. I use whitening shampoo for dogs on my horse. :D Some are more sensitive than others but generic baby shampoo is cheap as-all-get-out and more gentle than most horse shampoos.

yeah...I love the suave shampoo, and especially for gray horses, suave STRAWBERRY is the best. I leased a gray mare (really white) and the suave strawberry is the only shampoo that made her REALLY clean....I love suave! :D

well if you are braiding for like hunters and stuff then use an ace bangage, vet wrap. vet wrap can cause the circulation to be cut off to the tail.

Since I posted a picture of Regal's tail the day I started wrapping I thought I'd post an update. The color has really changed!

Cow boy magic is great but kinda expensive. I'm the "on a budget" kinda horseman. Suave shampoo is absolutly great for baths but the conditioner is too watered down for horse hair (usually). I bath with suave or orvus and use leave in conditioner afterwards(pert plus to moistureize).

Once a week or at shows I use Cow Boy magic for that sheen (it also seperates hairs to make the tail look thicker)

Hope this helps :D

ive been using this set my dad bought me and it ocks
it has in it

a small mane and tail grooming kit - use whenever you want
a special cream to rub into the mane - 1 a week
a sweet smelling spray for the mane and tail - whenever (comes in strawberry vanilla and my favrote midsummer night)
a gel wich you wash out after 5 mins for the tail - 1 very 2 weeks
a tail shampoo and conditioner - 1 a week
a mane condetioner and shampoo - 1 every 2 week
a bowl wich comes 50 packets of sticky liguid wich you pour into the bowl after filling the bowl with hot wall. up to 4 times a week

its really good and it comes with loads you can get it from most posh dressage shops- my dad got me one from a shop called The Dressage Shop in devon

its really cheap for what it is.

I have loads of trouble with my welsh pony, he rubs a lot but its due to sweet itch. I swear by camerosa ointment for the top of his dock. I get really confused for what shampoo to use on him, but as he lives out his coat gets pretty disgusting so i saw this stuff in my local tack shop called dirty beastie, its designed for horses with really thick coarse coats, such as dales and welsh's. Baby oil is good on the ends of the tail after u've washed it, just dont get in on the dock. I squeezed the juice from a grapefruit onto archies mane a few days before a show cos his mane was dry and dull and i left it on for about five minutes then shampooed as normal and it made him really glossy. He smelt good too!

we wash the tail put in tons fo conditioner(leave it in) even if its not ment to be a leave a leave in conditior it works better usualyl then the leave in ones and u wash their tails before a show anyway
also we put them in tail bags, i make them myself and would be happy to send you one or soemthing
if u have any question about how to use a tail bag(such as putting it in)
where to find the tail bag
the tail bags go to about their hock so theya re planty long enough to swat flies still

I have Walking horses so long full tails are an extreme plus in the show ring. one thing i have found that really works is if you have a fungal or itching problem try putting Listerine on their tails after washing it. It'll kill any bacteria on the tail and stimulate tail growth. The other thing i use is Shapley's MTG! One of the best investments you'll ever make (it's a cheap product anyways!). This stuff really makes the tail grow!!! The other thing I do for my show mare's tail (it wraps around her body and it's full!!!!) is during the winter months when i'm not showing is i make sure it's clean. Then I braid it up and then fold it, put some bands on it then wrap it with electrical tape from about an inch from the bottom of the tail bone to the end of the tail. The tape holds it really well and it won't come down. Normally I take her tail down once during the winter and re-wash it then put it back up again. But during show season i make sure I use really good condititioners in it! Personally I get conditioner from a perfessional salon (in the gallon jug) and use that. Now that can get a lil pricey but if ya want a nice tail then sometimes ya gotta pay a lil. Finally try not to brush it much, use your fingers instead. that way you don't rip it out. also start at the bottom and work your way up. Now all of this will really help growing a tail but sometimes i think having the "hair gene" really helps! I have seen some horses that just have a hard time growing out a nice thick tail. Good Luck, hope this helps!

I know how to deal with that problem. My horse's tail used to be super dry and not pretty. Well what you do is you wash it daily with just soap, no conditioner. Then you brush it out really well (no knots) and you wrapp it and put it in a tail bag ( not three peice) If you want it wavey you will braid it and wrapp it. You will repeat this process until show day!!!!!!! then the morning of the show you should take off the tail bag, unbraid the tail and give the tail a good brush. then what i do is i put show sheen in my hands and run my fingers through the tail so that i am not using too much sheen cause that dulls up the tail. by now you are ready for the show ring!!!!!! :p I hope i was some use to you :o

I never wash my mares tail... haven't in 2 years. I brush out the very bottom once a week and right at the roots to stimulate growth every time I ride. THe only time I brush out her entire tail is for shows, clinics, etc, and when I do brush it out I pick out all of the knots by hand first.

For show, my gaited mare usually gets her tail braided. Her tail normally never gets brushed, because, in the pasture, it gets knotty and tangled. Before the show, I wash my mare down and leave the mane and tail for last. I take both my hands and scrub Mane and Tail Horse Shampoo in her mane and tail. You can use people shampoo too. It works well and shines. :] After that, I leave it in for about three minutes and rinse it out. [all of it] I then add Mane and Tail Horse Conditioner. It is really awesome. It softens the mane and tail by miracle and shines. I leave it in for another three minutes and then rinse. I let it dry by the wind, but comb it as it is wet to release all the tangles. After I comb it through, I brush it and braid it. I then add hairspray and release the braids right before the show, so it is curly and shiny and smooth. Her tail is close to the ground, I am trying to let it grow to the ground, but with the pasture and her feet, I don't know how long it will stay, but that works awesome!
