My mare is extremely strong and when we jump, sometimes she just Toatally ignores my hands and aids, I can stop her, but it takes a while and my arms get sore fast, and I have strong arms. Right now I ride her in a loose ring french snaffle. my trainer and I were considering switching to a slow twist. What are your comments on a slow twist, experiences or warnings? Please comment I want to make the wisest dicsion possible. and please only comment if you are experienced or have used a slow twist.

my mare is very very hot and forward and i've found that the slow twist was a LOT of brakes. For Paxton this is a very effective bit that we use when schooling cross country every few months.
If you have soft hands and realize that a slow twist does solve rushing problems, then with careful use it may prove to be a beneficial tool.
You may find that using a slow twist once every 3-4 jumping rides is all you need to get her to sit back a bit and respect your aids.

I use a slow twist, and I think it's a great bit. It's not very harsh, but it gives more control than a regular snaffle. For a horse that gets a little forward, it's a good choice. However, you have to be careful not to yank over jumps, because that will be far more unpleasant for the horse (so is a regular snaffle, but a bit less). It gives the right amount of control when I need it, and soft when my horse is under control.

Thank you SO much, i do have very light hands, but I whenever I ride her have to have a very steady contact. She is just so darn head strong! She doesn't rush, she just barrels right through my hands and ignores all my aids... I think I might try doing what you said silver, switching bits every few rides, I ws actually thinking of that yesterday! Thank you both all theinfo you gave me really helps! :D

Lizzy, another way to help slow Limey down is to, turn her in small cicles (around 10 meters or so) and that REALLY helped me with Tia!

Well, Tia and Limo are totally different, if I need to slow her down in a hurry I'll do that but I'd rather have her listening to me instead of having her slow down because she looses her balance, One thing I did with Erika today that really helped (when she is rushing and not focused on me) is riding her in a 20 m circle and constantly change what I'm doing like ride a 10 meter figure - eight like you said, then changing direction and going from canter to halt, trot to halt, halt to trot, canter from walk, walk from canter, canter to trot, trot to canter, ect. and not do the same thing for more than a few strides and that really helped her slow down and listen to me. I don't think that particular excersize would be good for on a reg. bases though. This Slow twist bit really has helped though!!!

Each horse is different, so that needs to be taken into account with each horse.

That is a very good idea though!!! :) I don't know of many horses hat don't slow down when you turn them in a small circle, It is a great suggestion!
