Maybe Gem has lost his confidence. Horses, like people, go through that sometimes.

I'm no expert, but maybe try to rebuild Gem's confidence by going over small crossrails and poles, and work your way up.

It's also possible that Gem has gone sour; maybe he's bored! Take a break for a while and vary your riding routine.

Also, be sure to vet check Gem for any aches and pains he might have, that would make him refuse jumps; check your tack and bit for any ill-fitting or pinching, rubbing, etc. parts.

Like HappyHorse said, he might be soar. Or he could be bored, if all he does is jump, he might just get tired of it. Maybe a few nice trail rides and a break from jumping would do him good.

I would still have a vet come and check him to make sure he isnt soar though, it could cure all issues if he is.

Well when i do barrel racing i seen some horses refuse to go. So i asked Peggy about it and she said they are trying to tell you something. Maybe he's getting sore to the point where jumping is getting painful for him.

Or either that he is getting tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Do something else with him instead. Do some trail rides, drassage, or just mess around in the arena. Give him a break for awile and see if that helps him. :)

Sore or Sour

Either something is hurting his (teeth, neck, back, feet, hocks, etc) or he's simply been jumped to much.

I'd get a full vet exam with xrays if necessary and discuss trying legends for a few months. If he doesn't improve then give him 1-2 months off, just going for light hacks and dressage. After that time, bring him back, and start doing small fences (no more then 2 feet) every once in a while.

Once they associate jumping with pain it is difficult to break the thought process, but it is possible.

As well as the pain and confidence issues, has your riding changed, or has someone rode him over jumps?

He also may be bored/tired. Some horses will just stop.
