Greetings from Pennsylvania ,
After a too long hiatus,I got another horse,
An just came eight year old Curly , Dennis.
He is a joy, and seems to like dressage.

I have an active intrest in fox hunting, and racing over fences,
chases , and combined training.
My Major in colllege was Animal Husbandry, but I make my living as an
Aestician , funny how things turn out :p

I look foreward to finding some good conversation on these boards
about my interests, and learning about some of yours!

Nice to meet you all,
Paula

Howdy!
I just have one, and yes he's a Bashkir Curly..
I am so glad to meet you !
I had never heard of this breed, let alone had seen one,
Till I went to look at Dennis ..

I did try to post a pic, but the one's I have are too large..
I am in the middle of moving, and when I get my PC here,
I will reduce them , and post some...
I think he's pretty cute..

Gawd there are a lot of "I"s in this reply :)

This much I do know, he is originaly from Tennesee,
a few people have told me he's got foxtrotter in his line..
I guess Curlies from Tenn do, any ideas on this?
Also, he has been hard to fit for a saddle,
If there is anything you can help me with there.
Please feel free to pass the info along!

Thanks for the welcome!
Your guys are beautiful!
Paula

Hi Paula! I can't wait to see pictures of Dennis!

A lot of curlies have foxtrotter in them- it's one of the breeds where the genes for it "popped up". Regal's 1/2 foxtrotter too, but not gaited.

My gelding was difficult to fit to a saddle too. I recommend a Courbette saddle- their newer ones have a tree that is totally self-adjusting- not just with interchangable parts, or flexible, but it actually moves and adjusts itself to fit the horse- LOVE it. Some of the synthetics are good too- they tend to be more flexible which realy helps!

I did manage to get a head shot of Den on my profile page,
it is sort of dark, but you can at least "see" him..

Thank you so much for the saddle advice!
I have been looking at the "magic" saddle by Courbette,
and the Throwogoods have those broadbacks..
He is still slimming down as well..
he spent three years out of work,
on grass 24/7 , getting two full cans of
sweet crimped oats a day ,
He looked like a Macy's ballon :)
I know he thinks we are trying to starve him to death.

Den has a floating trot, due to the foxtrotter I suppose..
Interesting, I am still learning about the breed..
Some of the backgrond is pretty mysterious!

Have a perfect day ,
Paula

Awwww.. he's so cute! how tall is he? I love his face and how curly he is!

I like the "magic" line Courbette'ws got. Seem like a good value- I've kind of had my eyes peeled for a used one on eBay but so far no luck.

We're finally starting to really curl up! I took this picture of my guy last night:

Thank you for the welcome Courtney ,
Pleased to meet you :)

Oooo Lindsayanne, I got a few more posted,
in See all pics..

Thank you , I think hes a cutie too ..
He sticks out at exactly 16.H
He is a big boy!
I have always been a sucker for chesnuts and dapples..
Your horse is lovley ..
Dens out ALOT , he would live happily outside I think,
so hes got a good bit of curl going on.
He seems to hang on to his mane in the summer ,
but his tail ,, well I have been working on that ..
He adores mud and loves to roll in it ,
Are'nt I the lucky one ?

TTFN,
Paula

I saw the other pictures- I really like him! You got a big one didn't you? it's hard to find registered ones over 15.1- you got lucky! Regal's 16hands with shoes on (he prefers it said that way than "just over 15.3" :p ) and Ebony is 15.2.

Are you going to be getting into dressage with him? My experience with curlies and dressage has been very good, they seem to be much rounder than you'd expect.

You are so kind, Thank you !
He is big for a Curly, and he is registered,
His former owner is getting his papers for me..

Den is just willing to please,
he was ridden Western before, and just on trails,
They did some Pat Perilli (sp) training with him.
So, I got my hands on some DVD's , and watched them.
Some of it was just good sound common sense,
some of it , such as the "carrot stick" was just ----
Fill in the blank :)

He seems to like Dressage, and is getting the idea
of getting his butt UNDER himself,
With that neck of his I was afraid he would be a lot
heavier in the front, I've got him going in a big fat snaffle
and he seems to do well, getting him ON the bit
is a bit of a challenge, and a great deal of leg,
but he is "getting it ".
I am not sure if this is breed specific, he is pretty darm quiet,
and when he gets frustrated or confussed, he just stops !
I give him a monent and we go on.
When he get's a bit lighter in front, and has a little more balance,
I would like to see how he goes over some small fences.
We use a lot of ground poles now, so hes used to seeing them.

All in all it is interesting, to be back in it,
and to have an eight year old, who is so green ,
It snowed today,
I can't wait to see him in it !

Enjoy whats left of the week end,
Paula
