This is our horse, Sara, she is an ex-racer and won't get pregnant (useless)... So I was bored and lounged her yesterdya, I put a small jump in the round pen and she jumped it BEAUTIFULLY!!! I have a pic of it on my phone, so today I lounged her some more (outside the round pen) and got a nice pic! I attached it, Sara is 19... She acts like a 6 year old, do you think she has any potential, not for a grand prix jumper, but just little things? She hasn't been riden in probly about 8 - 10 years... and I've never been allowed to just hop o her and see how she is, (Sara is a little crazy sometimes). But I just wanted to see if other people see what I see in her...

Please comment

Lizzy, she looks amazing! WOW! I didn't know Sara could jump that well. I think she has great potential... :) But... she hasn't been riden in A LOG time... That's alittle problem.

yeah, lol! She is 19 years old too, that's what made me nervous... She is a beautiful jumper though, her son is headed towards Grand prix by the way, jumping is in her genes!

I have two things.... #1. she is very very pretty and has the looks to be a jumper and #2. I think she could so little jumps maybe a foot or so. That maybe would make her live longer with daily exercise and care.

I really like your mare. She looks like she's well taken care of and very healthy. Although she's old I think she'd be perfectly fine as long as she isn't arthritic or she's on supplements or whatever to help it. She has pretty nice form, lol. Her legs are a bit loose, but I think thats just the timing of the picture, and the height of the jump. Have fun!!

Since Sara is 19 years old... Do you think she might get Arthtirtis (sp?) especially if she hasn't been ridden in 8 -10 years? Do you think she might Lizzy from jumping? (Maybe you should het her some jumping boots to support her legs or something.)

I don't know, I jumped little 14.2 hh 23 year old gracie 2 ft lol :D I will deff. put boots on her and give her joint injections if I ever do ride her, I've always wanted to ride her, but she is kinda crazy sometimes, I would DEFFINATLEY have my trainer ride her a few times first! She isn't going to turn into a jumping horse...probably.. :p

Actually, I think she has great potential! Her knees are even and she has a great expression. I really think she does have potential, depsite her age. I rode a 23 yr. old gelding who made a great dressage horse and loved to gallop!

Wow, I'm really getting excited, I've always wanted to ride her, just to see how she is! :p I'm gonna talk to my mom about y trainer getting on her next time she comes!!! :D

I think she would make a nice riding project for an experienced rider. Not grand prix, just light, flat work with occasional jumping maybe...

horse_lover
03-16-2008, 07:15 PM
yeah, I wouldn't DREAM of jumping anything over 2 ft, well maybe I would dream, but I wouldn't actually do that! :p It would be REALLY EXCITING
If I just got to ride her, ever since I started riding I've wanted to ride or see someone else ride her!

I would take things slowly though. She is an older horse and she is still high strung. I think she would be a lot of fun though!

yeah, She has deff. calmed down as she has aged, and I don't think I would be able to really trust her for a while, she is really peronable though, just after yeaterday, she treated me like her best firend, she was following me every where! :)

Do you want me to post a few more pics of her so you can see a little more of her?

Maybe she likes working and having something to do. It might make her feel closer to you. Some horses love having a purpose.

She really does jump well, but if you haven't been allowed to ride her (unless I misunderstood), how would you use her? She looks very healthy for her age, so I'm sure little jumps wouldn't do her any harm if you were to ride her.

I know what you mean, My mom has never wanted me to ride her because she can be really, well let's just say, "silly" and I've always wanted to have a more expeirienced person ride her, just so I can see how she would be, and what she would do, I've always wanted to ride her but I've never had a chance, so I'm tring to convince my mom (again) to let my trainer get on her in the next lesson I have.

I talked to my mom and Sara hasn't been ridden (sp???) in 7 years and the she had gone to a hunter jumper lady for some flat work, (Sara has never been jumped) for the first 20 min sara does that little jig thng a lot of horses do when they're nervous, like a REALLY collected trot, and my mom said that if I got on her she'd probly be ok, My mom has never told me that! I've always wanted to know more about sara, but my mom has been reluctant to tell me anything! probly next weekend my trainer will get on her!!! :D :)

I think Sara, would feel more loved if she had a purpose or something. I think it's a great idea to ride her or lunge her! ;)

Just be extremely careful not to overwork her - she's very old and you must preserve her. If you're going to work her make sure that her diet provides for it, and you're most likely going to have to bute her as well because her joints will not take the impact as well and she will be sore.

19 is old enough that you need to demonstrate more care when bringing a horse back into work. A slower conditioning schedule, ample turnout, and injections are usually the best bet with older horses.

To the OP have you looked into adequan or cosequin?

We give 2 of our horses adequan I don't thik she's going to turn into a horse that gets ridden every day... If she does, we will give her a joint supplement

What a beautiful girl she is. :)

Personally, I think ANY horse has potential to do anything.

It just takes time and work.

Keep it up. ;)

Okay...I'm sorry for saying thats not old. Just Sara looks better than A LOT of 19 year old horses so she probally would jump well I think. Maybe only do it a couple times a week or something. I don't I would rie her every single day. I mean just regular little exercise not endurance working.

I'm not exactly sure where the defensive tone came from, but it is certainly unnecessary. I never said that 19 is too old or even old, merely that it is old enough that you should look into some form of supplement.

Just becuase Sara looks better than other 19 year old horses, dosen't mean she will jump better. A horse doesn't jump better than another horse becuase he's prettier, but becuase he either has it in his blood, or he is very athletic.

Well, ya, I agree, But in a way, sometimes a horse that looks better can jump better, like, picture a 19 year old like Sara, then picture a ninteen year old that hasn't been conditioned properly and has leg issues and has grayed out and all, you can sometimes tell their potential in cases like that just by looking at them. Lol, Sara looks a lot better that little 20 yr old Gracie does!!! :p

LOL! But not ALL the time you can pick if a horse will be a good jumper based in his looks... But in some cases you can. :)
