Any helmet certified is fine, I think. I'd avoid the ones selling under $30 or $40. They might pass the certification but they can't be comfortable or very functional. On the flip side, avoid those titaniaium ones they're selling now for $500+ not only is that price insane, but if you fall hard on your head you WANT your helmet shell to break- those titanium ones won't, which actually makes the impact worse.
I have a GPA, it is the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn but they are overrated and overpriced.

I have a GPA and love it. It fits me great and is really comfterable. The most important thing to look for in a helmet is the fit. A helmet that doesn't fit you correctly won't do as much good in an accident opposed to a helmet that fits you. I would recommend going into a tack store and just try on helmets until you find one that fits you correctly and you're happy with.

I recommend a GPA helmet too. I don't have one right now because they are soo expensive. But they are the best helmet to wear right now. Or if your are doing hunter classes, you can get a Charles Owens helmet. It is more appropriate for those type of classes. ;)

I guess I am old school.
I school , show , hunt and event in an eventing or track helmet...
Just change the covers for whatever I am doing..

Right now I use a Troxel Classic Show Helmet for schooling and a IRH velvet helmet with a brown suede strap that you can hold your hair in. I personally hate GPA's, they're WAY too expensive, too round for a nice custom-like fit, and I like the look of the classic velvet still. I would recommend IRH velvet helmets with the suede backing for your hair, they're cushy, just as ventilated as as GPA, extra easy to contain your hair in!!!, and extremely affordable.

GPA helmets are good but overpriced. just try not to go overboard on the price or buy one that is to cheap.
I have a Charles Owen GR8 and I love it! It's light weight and fits me really well. It's also cool looking...lol :)

GPAs are way too much money to spend unless you're really serious about showing. I still don't know whatever happened to the pretty and classical velvet helmets

And like someone already mentioned GPAs are going out of style already whereas regular helmets wont! LOL.

i dunno...but gallops has the regular stuff....u would think that stuff would come off...i dunno!
i no that GPAs are SEI and ASTM approved...but i think troxel is only SEI, and there are new helmet rules that some places have to have you wearing ASTM and SEI approved helmets

GPA's are really the nicest helments, but if you need a cheaper alternative try the IRH's. I have one, and it fits great and feels really safe. Not to mention it's not a bad looker either!

I have a Charles Owen GR8 and I love it. Sometimes I forget I am wearing it. And for the person that had a CO and wanted a GPA because it has vents, the CO have vents, they just aren't visible.

It really depends on what you're doing. If you're jumping a lot, and jumping bigger, you should spend more on a helmet. Plus, practically everyone in the show ring has GPAs or COs. ;)

When I bought my helmet I had a lot to consider. I have had a brain tumor and hhad surgery so I have to be extremely careful about my head and injury. I looked at helmets for years and finally I bought the IRH jumper helmet with front vents. I just love this helmet, has a terrific fit (I wear a 6 7/8 size, hart to fine!) and this one stays where you put it. I can wear it all day and the price is right. I would love to have a GPA but with cost being a consideration I chose a IRH. And I am going to buy another IRH with Velvet covering for showing Hunters.

But get the pretty kind with the stripe.
A cheaper alternative to GPA's, but I also like the look and feel better.

I'd go with GPA, Xharles Owen if you want to pay the price.
IRH are really good too but cost less. It depends on the style and fit. Just try them all, I guess.

I got an IRH helmet for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. It has air holes in the back, gel cushion in the lining, and is velvet. The stripe in the middle lets you change the colors (I got the one where you can apply stickers) and I love that too. I personally think GPA helmets are overpriced, and I find IRH helmets a great buy, and I love to wear it!

I really like GPAs and Charles Owen Hamptons. The GR8 by Charles Owen is ok, but I really really really want a GPA. Not that I have the money now ;) Currently I have an IRH and I don't like it. The stripe is ugly and my helmet gets SOOOOOOO sweaty. It's not even funny. Go GPAs!

I personally love my GPA
BUT
All helmets have to pass ASTM and SEI approval.. They are all SAFE!
The other factor to consider is that you need to replace your helmet every five years as the parts that keep it safe for your head start to degrade. Also, if you ever fall on your head or hit your head, you need to replace it.
Now, not all of us can afford to buy a new $400 helmet every five years or every bad fall, so keep that in consideration.
All helmets that are ASTM and SEI approved (Which is necessary for any USEF rated events) ARE SAFE!
There is no proof that GPA's are safer than any other helmet.
Dont get me wrong, I love mine!

If it is approved and fits you, then it is the best helmet for you. The fit is the most important thing because if it slides around then it cannot protect your head as well.
Personally I love my Charles Owen helmet and before that I had a Troxel and before that it was an International Rider, and I loved all of them and they fit.

I have a Charles Owen GR8 and I loooove it. It's really comfortable and I think it looks nice. :) I used to have an IRH and absolutely adored it - I had it for a good 4 years. A person I rode with broke it and I finally threw it out. I would suggest IRH or Charles Owen though. :)

Tee hee. I remember that. You had to glue it back on and she didn't even apologize - right? Ah...and the reins... only another reason...hehe
And your charles owen is pretty amazing.

Anywho, yeah, it's amazing. ^^

Ahh, that sucks. That's why I don't let anyone else ride in my helmet - just too risky. I don't really follow this, but if you fall on your head, you're supposed to replace your helmet regardless. Hence, no one rides in my helmet. :p

Haha, see that's the funny thing - she wasn't even riding in it.
She was trying to 'shape it to my head' by pulling on it and bending it. I heard a crack, asked what it was, and she goes "oh nothing".
I had no idea what she was doing at the time, as I was young and she was my trauner's daughter, so I THOUGHT she knew what she was doing. Funny, isn't it?

Bwah yeah, and then your mom or someone pointed out something was wrong with your helmet, so you took it off and you could pull the entire...pretty layer off. She was like...oh it must have been like that before, didnt you notice?
