What are your tips or your groom's tips for making your horse look extra special? For example... how to really make their coat shine.

:)

i really like the coat shine product from carr, day, and martin...it works really well...especially if you spray the body, and then put some on a soft brush and brush the horse with it. Lanolin also works really well for shiny coats

To make my horses shiny...I generally rely on a really great feed ration and daily grooming. I have a homemade mixture of a conditioner that I used on my show steers. Makes their coats really healthy and shiny (naturally) and doesn't leave the coat slippery.
Its a mix of: conditioner, water, mouth wash and aftershave. Interesting and sounds weird, but the mouth wash causes the water to evaporate quickly so you're left with just conditioner on the coat. If anyone wants to know the mix, let me know. You'll save a TON of money on all the rip off products for the horse world.

the best show ring grooming tool is a baby wipe! it picks up all the dust and makes the coat look slick and shiny!!!!! :D

Pepi-Spray. It's called "Pepi-Coat Conditioner", comes in aerosol and non-aerosol, and is $6.50 at www.sstack.com ($6.95 for non-aerosol). Just spray it on and go over it with a cloth or an ultra-soft brush. Makes the coat nice and shiny. Don't sray it on their face, though. Spray it on a brush then go over their face. It smells horrible when you first spray it but it looks great. Helps keep the dust down too.

I soak a cloth diaper/ or burping cloth, in warm water and baby oil ( a few good squirts of oil in a bucket, or any container that's deep). I let it soak for a good 4-5 hours, doesn't have to be this long. Then ring it out and let it dry,I store it in a plastic zip-lock bag in my grooming bag. Take it out when ever you need a quick shine!!!

one little thing that i think helps if you just want to look nice for a lesson or whatever is to take the soft brush and dip just the tips very lightly in water (i dip in the water bucket... because it's nearby) and then if you shake any huge drops off and brush them with the damp brush, it reeaally helps pick up dust that you might not see, especially if you brush backwards and then forwards repeatedly in short brisk strokes.

lol... i sound like i should write a book on it. seriously though, it's quick and easy.

i also have a question for horse owners who turn their horses out without blankets into cold weather: how often do you groom and thoroughly groom your horse? i think i've heard that you shouldn't groom them a lot because it strips their hair of the natural oils that help keep it waterproof and warm, but i don't know. i'd really like to know!!

I spray or rub my detangler in my horse's mane and tail, then curry and brush his body, then comb out his mane and tail. While I'm grooming his body the detangler has a chance to soak in and loosen knots.

*Microwave a towel to make it warm, almost hot, then rub it on a sweaty coat to speed up the drying process, also works well for lather between cheeks!

*Baby oil works just as good as expensive detangler on manes and tails and adds pretty sheen to eyes and muzzles.

*Brilliant Brunette De-Frizz and Shine Serum helps less-toned or chubby bay's and chestnuts look more muscled if applied to tops of loins, croup, shoulders, and backs of hind-quarters.

*Carr & Day & Martin Canter Mane & Tail is the BEST detangler I've found.

*Vetrolin Green Spot Remover works miracles on gray horses.

*A simple ladies razor can be used instead of loud clippers on the eyes, muzzle, and ears of a nervous horse.

*Smelling horse and winter bathing not an option? Shake baby powder on horse's coat and brush off. May not work on black or dark bay horses though!!

*Spray detangler on a damp coat to increase shine and repell dust.

*When not showing wrap horses's tail, cover with tail bag or old sock, and tie long pieces of twine around it for flies. May look odd, but by the time the show season comes, your horse's tail will be long, thick, and luxurious!!

*For a dry, sensitive udder or sheath facial lotion or petroleum jelly works wonders.

*Bath beads can double detangler and shine for manes and tails, pop one into your horse's mane and one in their tail, also keeps your hands and nails nice too!

*Petroleum Jelly helps moisturize dry and cracked hooves and frogs.

Hope these helped, I've used these for years and they've never let me down.

I usually put in a spray bottle with a little water and use it like fly spray (the amount that you put on the horse that is) Works wonders

* take a leg brace like absorbines refreshmint and put it ina bottle and spray it on sweat marks, gets rid of them fast.
* Infusium 23 leave in conditioner on the tail after washing it, it takes less time then conditioning it and everything.
* Since my horse has a frizz tail when im going to shows after im done washing it ill put in jhon freida's frizz ease on it, ha no more frizz! and for making the horses coat shiny and everything, showsheen i find is the best.

works really well....

Flax seed and soy work great for a shiny coat, and soy is protien and has a little fat too. ground flax seed, you buy it un-ground and then grind it in a coffee grinder, and also soy works really well. You have to grind flax b/c some ppl say it swells in the horses stomach...who knows if its true, but I always grind it to be on the safe side

I have our two horses out in the pen with no blankets and I live in NE,,,,VERY COLD (it was -7 a couple weeks ago).........so they grow very very thick coats. I don't groom all that often. They had a two month winter break, so I actually never got them out. But really, I'd say once a week curry them pretty good, but other than that, if you're not riding, leave them alone so they can be natural. If you're riding and they're not muddy, just use a soft brush to get rid of the hay, dirt, whatever is floating on their coats.
Hope that helps. :)

my horse's coat is shiny because we give him beet pulp, which is fills them up with vitamins and stuff without making them fat.

I used to have a little pony and she loved it when i would groom her for a really long time after and before i rode her. After about a week of just babying her, her coat shined like she was pure gold. :D

My ponies coat shines natuarally, but to make it extra extra shiny, i get that stuff that makes it shiny, and ony faces baby oil. For tails, useshow sheen detangler spray, and when u wash a tail, use cowboy magic!

I do combing and lots of it! Combing is a lot better than brushing, it doesn't break as many hairs. You must do it gently as well to get the best effects. Also use de-tangling spray.

Well, my horse lives out side, so I have to do a little more. I give Sooch a bath after every hard workout, and use the color inhanceing shampoo. i give him a good brushing every day too, and use the flicker soft brush a lot, along with a very soft finishing brush. i like to use the Absorbine Santa Fe Spray too. :o

My friends don't use blankets with their horses because their coats get so thick. I live in the snow-belt and it can really get cold up here. The horses do fine, but in really cold weather, they're left in the warm barn.
My friends still groom their horses in the winter (mainly because Dusty, the one horse, is an idiot and LOVES to find mud and roll in it if the snow melts a little!) But other than that, they still groom them so they look nice and clean ;) So, yes, grooming will help your horse feel clean and he will stay warm at the same time! (excellent question, by the way!) :D

I agree wih AidEE! A baby wipe makes them so shiny! This is kind of mean, but, I don't like to do it, my trainer makes me... we have to lock Acorn inside in te daytime so his color doesn't fade. He does get to go out at night, though. So, my tip, if you have a light colored horse, keep them inside in the daytime and let them out at night:)
