I've found a way to get around cold bits! Okay, so I HATE trying to warm up icy bits in the winter. It takes forever and it's hard to get your hands warm afterwards. Anyway, so what I did was wrap my bits. I used Sealtex bit wrap and cut it so that it would barely overlap when it was stretched to the max. I covered all the metal that goes in the horse's mouth on my twisted wire snaffle and medium-port pelham this way. It hasn't made any difference in how the horse reacts to the bit since the wrap is pulled so thin, but it doesn't get as cold as metal does and you don't have to spend any time warming it up. It's great!

very smart. i keep mine in the warm tack room so i dont have to worry, but thats a really good idea for horseshows where it will stay in my trunk. :D

I use the hot hands hand warmers. They work wonderful and keep your hands warm as well. They are also very cheap, so I buy a bunch at one time!!

I'd be worried about some of the material being swallowed or injested... especially if and when the horse chewed at the bit to show concentration. I usually just stick to warming it with my hands or hot water, but one of the barns I work at has a specially designed bit warmer. You set the bit in the little slit and turn it on... it takes a little while for the thing to warm up though, so I usually just sacrifice a little bit of hand warmth for my horse's comfort. ;)
