I have aquired a 6 year old Spanish Mustang mare that has been raised domestically but she was never broke nor is she people friendly. I need to get her to trust me and eventually get a halter on her any suggestions. I am feeding her in a round pen and making her eat out of a bucket that I am holding she will let me touch her some during feeding but it is ever so lightly on the nose or neck.

what i've heard from people, and i guess it's a parelli thing too, is first to get your horse used to you. from what it sounds like, your horse is already somewhat used to you, but it's hard for me to tell. what i hear is that if you just sit out in the pasture when your horse is out, the horse will look at you and come up to you and whatever, and i guess they just familiarize themselves with your general presence.

i'm not real experienced on this kind of thing, i just wanted to toss in my tiny bit of knowledge.

I used to own a mustang and the best piece of advice i can give you is assert yourself as the leader. Rockie was the biggest pushover ever but he still needed the herd mentality. As soon as he knew I was in control as the "alpha" he summitted right away. Starting him was the easiest thing after that. When it came time I saddled him up, threw him in a snaffle, and then just mounted him. Even at two he acted like he had always been ridden. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

well your horse is still getting used to you so it should be nervous but you should spend as much time with her as possible. i have a 12 year old that i couldnt get near with a halter if my life dpended on it. so what you can do is every time you feed her oats bring the halter with you. when you get to that point ,that is. it worked wonders for me.know my horse runs to me when i get the halter. just a tip.

there is nothing faster on four legs than a horse headed back to the barn
