ok well i am going to a womans retreat next week and there is a lake that we swim in... and this is the first year me or ruby are going
and i was talking to people who went before and they said that they swam with their horses in the lake...
and i was wondering if anyone here at cc has swam with their horse and if there are any hazard or recommendations. i need to think about :D

Some horses wont go into the water if it's full of weeds and animals. I've been swimming with Shaz, Beau, and a couple of Casper's horses. If they have ONE bad experience in the water then you can just kiss future swims good bye. On the other hand, it is WAY fun. I would HIGHLY suggest you try it at least once. I love it. It's one of those fun days where your horse and you can just cool off out of the summer heat and enjoy yourselves. Try it, for sure.

I have swam my friend's horse. One important thing is when their whole body goes under water you have to lift your self off you horse because you can drown them.

Not necessarily. It depends how deep the water is. Because you are pretty much weightless in the water I wouldn't worry about it. Also, when your horse is completely submerged it's hard to stay on his/her back anyway, so you pretty much just end up holding onto their mane, saddle horn (hopefully it's an old crappy saddle, lol) or just wrapping your arms around their neck. It's so fun.

ya it sounds like fun.. and my horse isn't afraid of water so i think I'd ride her bareback... but then again i may want to walk her in first then swim beside her.. i don't plan on going out real far.. just enough so she can swim
thanks for all your help!!!

Oo! I like that idea, I'm planing on swimming through the lake/pond in our front pasture with Limliehgt soo, I was planning on just holding onto her mane, and hoping I would be able to get back in place before she got out of the water, but holding onto her neck would be much more assuring of me staying in the right place!

I didn't mean to offend you, I just wanted to point out that unless you weigh 200+ pounds I think your horse will be fine.

WOW! Your lucky! I would die if I could go swimming with Tia! The only thing I would worry about is if your horse doesn't have a halter on they might run/walk out of the water. I would put a leadrope or halter on them, so I can atleast control them! ;)

I say as long as you are responsible and aware than swimming with your horse is great! I've always wanted to try it! And, it can be theraputic, too!
