So how many of you do it? I think this is what I want to do now. lol I have a habit of trying things, see how I like it then i switch. Lets see this is all that I have done barrels, Poles, Jumping,Dressage, and hunter on the Flat. I am now thinking I want back into western. I have been working one of my horse's. So far Comanchee is doing great. I can drag a barrel behind him throw a rope all around him n Such while I am on him. I just need to buy me a rope and a cow head. I haven't ever roped befor so, I am going to try to teach myself. It isn't that hard is it?!?

I have seen it on tv but I have never tried it before. First of all is your horse scared of cows?

See that is the one thing I dont know. I dont think he will be he was in a pasture with Lama's,sheep, goats etc. When he was around 2 and they didnt bug him one bit. So I guess the first time I do it will just be to see if he freaks around them. I am going to say I think he wont. My trainer walked up to him the other day and was like He would make a great cow horse. I hadn't even told him I was planning to do roping.
lol Maybe I could talk my dad into buying me a little calf! like that would happen but they are cute little things! :D

In girls Roping it is called Break Away and all you do is throw the rope around the calfs neck pull it a little tight n let him go. So it is not as rough as mens Roping. where ya jerk the poor thing backwards. I have been around rodeo's for a while now. I am sure some of you have watched the "ABUSE" Storys on youtube etc. but a very large amount that you see the cow seriuosly hurt is rodeo's that are not real rodeo's. not all the time, but most. I would not do a sport that would hurt a animal.

the one thing you would need to practice before you get on you horse i how to twirl and throw the rope.... then get you horse used to ropes being swung fast above his head on both sides and ropes being thrown off him on boht sides... then if you and your horse feel confident enough then go ahead and try getting the cow head on his back, at a stand still.
they slowly build up to walking to the head and swinging hte rope while moving and getting the head. then when your ready move up a speed till you can do it at the requiered speed... whitch i think is a gallop or 4 beat canter right?
well i did this a little till i can do this as a 4 beat canter just i never competed
i don't think you should get a calf till you can rope at a fast pace... them lil buggers are fast at times...
i used my neighbors to practice team penning, cutting, and roping.
hope this helps :D

A four beat canter isn't a real gait, it's what western pleasure horses do to seem like their going a lot slower. 4 beating is illegal in most disciplines, but I don't think that's what you're meaning.
A collected gallop is what you want, but other than that, I would go with what Ruby said
