My Arab, rushes before jumps a lot. I'm going to have a lesson with my trainer on this issue pretty soon. I was just wondering if you guys have any feedback or tips you could give me. Tia get's very excited (like acouple steps before the jump) and she just runs into the jump... I try to do small circles and half halts but when she is in that" I gotta rush into the jump mode" she won't listen to anything I do, untill she is lands from the jump. And, NO I don't want to switch her to more severe bit. Right now, I ride her in a D rind snaffle. Thanks.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! :D That helped a lot! You're right, the 2nd link does sound a lot like me and Tia! :)

When the trainer said (from the 2nd link) "teach her to give to the bit properly, and to slow down and speed up well." Tia can bend on the bit very good, and she can slow down and speed up well, but she still rushes at the jumps... In the past I have worked on only jumping her like 18" for a week, and she STILL rushed the 18" jump! I have tryed almost everything and I can't seem to figure out why she rushes... I have also tryed, halting her as soon as she lands from the jump, and then turning her around and jumping it again (but I'm afraid that will make her "hard" in the month, and she won't respect my reins.) And, if I turn her in a circle (like it said to do in the 1st link) before the jump won't that teach her to refuse? (I'm sorry for asking so many questions!) :o

Ok, Tia can bend on the bit very well but I have never seen YOU practicing that. Do it when you warm her up do a lot of changes of direction, transition ect, to ge ther focusing on you, ALL WHILE ON THE BIT. And don't let her rush around on the flat work either. Everything you do , try to make it gentle and organized, when you do transitions, give her a heads up that something is going to happen first with your outside rein, then sit the trot and ask for a walk, same with canter, (but I would work on all this in the trot for a while.)

About turning them in a circle before the jumps- I have done that with Limo MANY times in the past and she's fine. I would try it, hmm.. there is so much to explain... I'm trying to thihnkn of a way for me to explain stuff so it makes sense... argg! umm... ok!

This is important: If she has too much "GO" on flatwork I wouldn't even go into jumping yet, spend some time on the flat, it will be very good for both of you. Do what I said earlier: transitions, change directions, ON THE BIT, ect. To get her listening you consistently, and if you REALLY feel like you need to jump, just go over a couple raised ground poles, have her TROT over them, and get her steady over those by regulating with your outside rein while going through the trot poles.

Sound Good???

Any other questions??

I do have a concern about the turning her in a circle before the jump... I have a feeling at will teach Tia to refuse (or duck out) I will try the on the bit stuff, and pracrtice a lot of 20 meter circles! (Beisides, we have that Canterbury Dressage show next weekend!!) :D Thank you sooo much, for all the advice Lizzy!

No problem! :D

I would ask Erika what she thinks about the turning before the jump thing. ;)

Wow! I just read that article from the first link, it's great!!!! This part is really good!

Flatwork & Lots of Transitions!

"You need to spend some time doing flatwork with your speedy horse. If you can’t control him at the trot and canter, you shouldn’t be jumping him!

Do loads of transitions every time you school on the flat. Stay in a 20-meter circle and work on transitions like trot to walk, trot to halt, canter to trot, canter to walk and canter to trot. Keep your horse thinking—and working! Doing lots of transitions helps..."

I would really try some of the things in that article!!!!

Actually I just looked over the 2nd link article and I really like that one too!

Yeah Tia does rush a lot. But I don't know what to do since I don't really show jumper. But Montana doesn't do that because she is perfect! (JK!!! :p ) lol :D

What I would do is first and foremost, meet with your trainer. I would also make sure to sit deep, give half halts and work over some smaller x-rails at a trot. Also keep up on flat work by doing transitions and cirlces (large and small). Hope my advice helps! :) Good luck with Tia!

Bucky used to be really bad about that. I did a lot of half halts and I sat real deep in the saddle. If you don't know what I mean I will show you Mon. Good Luck!

I have done some half halts in the past, and Tia doesn't really seem to listen (since she was a lesson horse, she is aliitle hard in the mounth...) Thanks for the advice though! See you Monday! :)

idk wut really to say other than just takin the jumpin easy 4 a while.Do stuff low, and at th e trot so that she learns she doesn't always have to speed up.Spirit does that same sorta thing, but mild er .Before you go over the jump take a couple laps at a asteady pace.A nice smooth trot or canter. Then when you go over the jump( and are gettin ready 2 go over it), give her a little extra reign pressure. Not too much though.

I read in a mag. a couple of weeks ago that when the horses are just starting to lift up into the air, the jump dissapears out of their vision,so they have 2 trust you a bunch 2 go over it. She just needs to know you're there a little bit more right when you're approaching. Don't worry, if you do it lightly & release when you're just about to land, then she wont bang up & hurt her mouth.

I would think that it would also teach the horse to refuse the jump though.
