i have a 5 year old QR that has been acting up ever since i brought him back from the trainers. a frind said that this happens a lot when a gelding lives with all mares and he does. when i try to ride him he starts bucking like crazy. but about a month ago he was fine and doing great everyone says that i should sell him to someone with other males or no other horses. what do i do? because i am nomt about to sell him.

i think that if you just build a relationship through ground work he'll come to calm down with you more. my gelding lives with my mare and that's what i'm doing with him. if she's out of the pasture he freaks out and runs around, but we're taking baby steps. he should see you as the herd leader and not need the companionship of his mare buddy when he's with you.

I agree with the baby steps. Sounds like he doesn't want to leave his pasture mates and go work. One, I would try more time on the ground and taking him away from the other horses. I have taken young ones to friends, shows, parks and anywhere away. I didn't ride them I just made them stand tied to the trailer and walked them around the grounds and loved on them and brought them home. I did that to a 3 year old I had and it took about 3 times and now she doesn't care. She realized that oh, if I go with mom and do good I get lots of attention and get to go back and tell my friends when I am done. lol. Shounds like he is just trying you and if he can buck and get you not to ride he has found that works to keep you from working him. OR somebody has put him up everytime he goes to acting up. If mine act up they work just as hard and longer. I get off and lunge them for about 20 minutes, get back on and see how they act. If they buck again, I get back off and lunge them again. I do this until they act right. As soon as they act like they have some sense I get off and love and pet on them and tell them they did good and then put them up. I have worked on one before for over an hour and half. I did that for about a week. Now I can go over a week and not do anything to that horse and she knows she is suppose to act a certain way if she wants to be loved on and put back out.

Good luck.
