I had lunch today with my cousin who's a vet. She mentioned something about a lot of trailering being bad for a horse and a contributing factor towards lamnitis when I was telling her I'm moving Regal closer to home and will be trailering back and forth from my trainer/instructor 1 or 2 times a week (2.5hr roundtrip).
Have any of you heard this? She's not a equine vet, so it could be more theory or case study type knowledge from vet school, but I wanted to follow up on it.

I would have to say I have never heard anything about too much trailering contributing to laminitis.

I wouldnt think that it would, they stand in a stall too. If horses travel with care and they are wrapped and prepared the way they should be I do not think that it would make a difference.

The only possible explanation I can think for this would be that trailering may put added stress on a horse, but if you wrap their legs and take care when transporting I doubt it'll be a problem.

hmm that's interesting! I suppose that it would put stress on the hooves at weird angles because they have to comphensate for the weight shifts(stopping/slowing/turning), but that's the only explanation that I can think of. Then again I'm no vet haha.

i think trailering can be hard on them, but more mentally then physically. eventually, i think trailering *could* take a more physical toll on them if they were moved around a lot.

If you wrap and take care of your horse while trailering you shouldnt have a problem. :) Ive never heard of trailering giving your horse laminits. Think about Pat Parellis horses, they travel thousands of miles and they dont seem to have a problem.
