The horse I lease, Vio, is a mixed breed gelding who I ride western. I cant get him to move with my legs so I figured out that he moves when you slap him with the split reins, and every time I do use them he tries to bolt. He doesn't respong to the reins when I try to turn him, he just backs up. And when I get him trotting he doesn't respond at all and he looses controll in a way; he doesn't respond to the reins at all, he goes were he wants, and he trys really hard to go faster. It's also really hard to turn him right. Nobody knows his history and his training is confusing. Could you please tell me what you think he might of been trained in originally? He really is a sweet heart and it seems like he was trained like ow I said, it doesn't seem like it's just wierd habbits.
HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Hmm, have you tried using both hands to turn him?
Bah, I just learned how to do that...it used to confuse me when ppl tried to tell me to use both.
But the horse I ride now doesn't always listen when I try turning her (which is why I need to keep working on her), and sometimes I have to jam my foot into her in attempt to make her go the way I want her to (which sometimes just makes her run).
An idea: get someone to lead him, maybe, but only guide him when he just won't budge. And when he obeys you while you're riding him, give him pats, tell him good boy, and if that don't work, maybe bribe him with treats?
Lol, I'm a beginner, so I'm probably so off.

If he isn't responding to your legs alone, try some nub spurs, not the sharp ones, just the rounded end ones. and don't kick him, press into him with the back of your foot.
if he isn't responding to your hands, that leads me to believe that he either 1. has a hard mouth or 2. the bit is making him uncomfortable, what kind of bit do you ride him in?
