Well today I went to the barn to ride dutch boy out on the trails. He was really good, and minded me very well, and the bit also my moms horse was getting pretty sweaty, and took him back to the barn. I wanted to keep Dutch out because show season will be starting up in 2 months (well my first show ne how) and I really need to start conditioning him. Well at first he was nervous because his buddy was leaving him, but then he calmed down. So I troted 3 times around the barrels (getting him used to the pattern) and he was doing great.
We were heading back and he just turned into a nightmare! He was troting (me holding him back) and was just spring loaded. So I did the normal I backed him up 3 steps and spun him around in circles. He tryed to bold comming out of the last one, so I hit him in the neck yelled at him, and spun him around in a circle. COming out of him he did a small rear so I hit him in the neck and kicked him into a small circle. he got the point a lil after that, and I had him walk a few steps (still spring loaded) and he tred troting so I stoped him he did a small rear so I hit him twice between the ears, yelled at him, and he shaped up a little bit after just enough to get back to the barn. ( I wasn't nervous or scared, I was just fourious) Dutch boys old owner let him run back to the barn, and has been getting away w/ it until I started riding him. Last year he made a bit improvement w/ minor random relapses, but after winter he had a HUGE relaps and he seems worse now than he was b4.
If he doesnt improve w/ me like he did last year, im going to have to pay for a trainer. But do you guys have any advice?

If I were you I would, put them in different pastures to seperate them(it helped for me since I have 2 horses and they depend on each other). That is a little fix. But the ofer thing I use is a thing called ACE. It has a longer name but that's what they call it. It is a shot that u give to them. It makes them more mellow. U can ride them with it and everything with a smaller dosage. Talk to ur vet about it. It really helped for me!!

Yea I have thought about sedatives but I want to use that as a last resort.
Well when the other horse left I just made him canter around afew laps, to do away w/ the nervouse energy and that worked pretty well. Well I looked in this one book I had, and the barn is where they get fed, and when peg brings them in they get fed. And after Im done riding dutch he immediatly goes and checks his feed bucket for food, so I think that plays a major role in his additudes. Im planning on bring Dutch home this summer, and hopefully this problem will be solved, because he wont get fed everytime he comes into the barn.

My advice I can give is to stop getting off of him at the barn. You'll have to do some walking but he will realize that the barn isn't the "ending" spot. At random parts of your future rides as you're coming home, get off of him and walk him back to the barn. If he decides he wants to try to bolt (make sure to have his halter on under his bridle and have a rope handy) lunge him out until he submits. He will connect working with his desire to head home and will eventually forget his need to rush home. If you have to, work him until he's tired and keep his mind active. Then lead him to the barn... only walk. I've had great success with this on barn/buddy sour horses and is a method I use while training green horses as well so they don't develop that tendency. Eventually, you can start riding back to the barn, but I would still mix it up for every ride and not end them all at the barn.
I do not recommend drugs of any kind. I don't even like taking drugs myself so I wouldn't give it to my critters but to each their own I suppose. I wish you luck.

Thank you so much =). I read online to lung him until he doesnt care about the barn and focus more on me. Yea I really dont want to sedate him because then im afraid he wouldn't be himself. Im also going to change the scenary and bring him to my house, and possibly getting a trainer my mom knows because she said he really works wonders.
