I am a member of a riding club that maintains a stable for members only. We own our own property -- about 15 acres. We have stalls for 40 horses, but not all of them are rented at any one time (but they have been in the past!) Our standing rule is that no horse may be turned out unless the owner (or a designated responsible person) is on the grounds. We've had some new members move in, and they leave their horses out all the time. I don't think this is fair, since they take up all the paddock space, leaving nothing for the rest of us. When I say anything, I get "Well, EVERYBODY knows it's better for your horse to be outside!" I can't make them see that leaving a horse out in a paddock 24/7 may be better for one horse, but it's at the expense of all the others. They are eating the paddocks to the ground! We also have WNV in our area, and I'm afraid we're going to have one of these horses come down with the virus -- but what do I know?
