Messages From Friends

I was just wondering how you put messages to your friends on their profile, right under the pictures of their friends. I can only figure out how to send them a private message, but not one that is displayed. I click 'send message' and then 'return to user profile' but then it just goes to a wierd blank profile. Does anyone else have this same problem?
