I would really like to get jumping lessons! But the thing is that the barn I ride at the riding "instructor" thinks she knows everything about riding, but she really doesn't. She practically beats the horses. Anyway I don't know what would happen if she found out that I wasn't getting lessons from her anymore. What should I do?

MOVE BARNS, you are paying her, if you are not satifyed with her work, spend your money on someone else for help

 Tell her that you don't feel comfortable with her lesson plans and politely thank her for efforts. Really- what is she going to do beat you? Sometimes its best to let a professional know when you are unhappy with their services. My advice to you is to find someone that you feel comfortable with so you can safely learn.

Let me post something a little different... horses are very large animals and sometimes they have to be handled fairly assertively. For example, I have a large, dull warmblood yearling and sometimes I have to get after him pretty hard for dangerous behaviour. I'm sure a bystander would have thought I was beating him though. Or, a while back, the kids at my barn got it in their heads that our farrier beat the horses. He is firm with them, yes, but for his own safety it is very important for them to stand still. He surely wasn't being abusive.
anyway, is there a way you can ask the instructor what she is doing when she is getting after the horses in a way that makes you uncomfortable? It is possible that she is losing control, and if she acts embarassed or shrugs you off I suggest getting a new instructor. However, if she can calmly explain to you what she is doing and why, maybe you will learn something new. :)

She BEATS them??? Definetly move, and you could also be a secret spy and find out if she seriously is beating them, report her to animal cruelty. The horses have feelings too, ya know?

I so agree with Dubby. Tell her that you dont like the way she is running things and that you are going to consider moving barns if she doesnt change how she treats the most gorgous animals on earth.

You should also get a camera or even better, a video camera, and video tape or take pictures of the results of her beating one of the horses, or make a video of her beating them. If animal cruelty agrees with you, your in good progress!! The horses will go to good homes or for adoption, and then they will be rode or turned out to be what horses are, wild and free!

"A bystander would think I was beating him", like what's up with that?
Why would anyone think you were beating your horse, if you weren't.
It's one thing to be firm with a horse, but beating one is horrible.

YES, i kno her, and the trainer, and the trainer, shari does not beat the horses, she is firm w/ them. PLUS, liz wouldnt be able to get jumping lessons, because the horse that she likkes, Bey, she ruined her, by letting her get away w/ everything, and she only rides her in one direction, so she cant even go the other direction, plus that horse was a champion horse for the US i believe, and she WAS worth a lot, and now she is being sold for $1000 because LIZ ruined her.

What a sec...how did what get ruined?
xoThoroughbredxo
12-15-2006, 07:19 PM
the horse was ruined, because she cannot even canter in the other direction without falling, and she was worth prolly aroung $7,000 or $10,000 because she was a champion riding horse in some big competition thing, and now she is only worth $1,000 because liz reuined her, by letting her get away with everything, and only execizing her in 1 direction, the same direction everytime. PLUS, she NEVER cools the poor horse down, and i m surprised that the horse hasnt colicked yet.

First of all, it's Liz's descision of what or where she wants to ride
Second of all, colic isn't about over heating and not cooling off, thats makes the horses muscles get all weird so they can't be in top performance. I know colic, my pony died of it

w/e i dont really care, u guys dont understand what im sayin. i m sorry bout ur pony, but she overheats her, puts her in her stall, and the horse drinks a lot, then she eats her grain and tons of hay, and i hate that f* in barn cuz of all the reatrded/ gay people at it, so i m leavin THANKFULLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLUS, the trainer does not beat the horses, and the trainer left that barn cuz she was sick of LIZ, cuz LIZ thinks she knows everything. PLUS, the trainer doesnt think she knows everything, and she even goes form brn to barn to learn new things, that is how she helped me train my horse, and my horse and i win grandchampion all the time at shows, and at year end awards we got grand chanmpion.

yea thats all true, i ride at the same barn as liz and alexis is my best friend and shari DOES NOT beat the horses if she did i woudt b gettin lessons from her.....and i use 2 ride BEy and she was the greatest lesson horse 4 me and now she takes off w/ kids & acts like a crazy horse! and YES the horse can colic if u dont cool it down it has happened at our barn b4 and the vet EVEN told me that not coolin down your horse can make it colic.
dubbyroxsoxs95
12-16-2006, 09:16 PM
and NO thats not colic....colic is in the intestines and gut, not stomach! And please don't sware. Liz can think whatever, but you guys can't make her opinion change. And how do you guys even know if she is betaing the horses? How do we know you not just covering for her? I'm sorry for blaming you guys, but you guys are acting like your soo smart and snooty that its making me mad! Your putting down Liz....
Oh and xoQuarterhorsexo or whatever...this is a basic definition I searched just so that you can understand what colic actually is:pain in abdomen: a sudden attack of abdominal pain, often caused by spasm, inflammation, or obstruction or serious digestive disease in horses: a serious disease of the digestive system in horses, sometimes leading to fatal intestinal blockage
P.S. I thought students that trainiers let them borrow their horses were suppoused to teach them what to do and what not to do
P.P.S. Horses in the U.S.A that are grand prix horses sell for around...lets see..... $200,000? I think I would know because I live in the U.S.A

WEll your so defensive! Your getting up in everyones face about stuff you are actually cluless! You and your throughbred friend are being snooty and acting like you are the rulers of riding! She may have rules in her house that she only has an hour to ride! Maybe you should be more suppourtive of her and help her after she finishes riding!

HAHA, NO. its none of ur business to talk bad bout our trainer. u can even come to the barn and watch her work with the worst horse there, and colic can be caused by not cooling down a horse, i kno, because a few horses died from that at my old barn, plus the vet told us. PLUS, she is not a grand prix horse, i didnt say that. I said she was a champion riding horse. not a champion jumping horse. u can even ask liz, and if she doesn't lie, she would say that. liz has no business talkin bad bout the trainer either, cuz whenever thje trainer tel her to do somethin (ie. put ur heels down) she does the exact oppostie of that on purpose, then when workin the horses, if the trainer says not to, she does what the trainer said not to. and we r not snooty, we r tryin to get r points across, and u have no business sayin all that crap.

I am not talking bad about your trainier..just I think you guys are acting like a judge judy and telling what she cant do and what she did wrong! Champion horse from the us are still $200,000! She wasn't a champion...my pony was $10,000, but not a champion! You guys are being snooty towards her...and yea but you said nothing about over heating, you said she just walks out of the arena without cooling them down! NOT COLIC! oh and STOP SWARING!! Everyone on CC has never sworn, and I think we all would like to keep it that way...so if you don't stop, I would suggest you 2 find a new online thing like this because if this were my website, you wouldn't be welcome! So be nice, or get out! That includes Liz!

Actually, it is not technically swearin but w/e, idc. all i said was that liz is lyin, then U started it. idc, im just sayin she is lyin. and im not tryinto start anything else, but YES they can colic from not cooling down and all that other stuff. and bey is a champion, i did not say in the us, it was in the state i believe, and i said my guess was $10,000 and accordin 2 u, it is wrong. o well it was just a guess. idc. im just stickin up for my trainer, who happens to be one of my best friends. so idc what u say, its not that i m leavin cuz of u, i will still be on, just not respondin.

Having been in this industry for 23 years I have found time and time again that honesty is the best policy. Trainers tend to take a clients move quite personally. Riding is supposed to be fun. So if that is compromised be humble, honest, and thankful, leave and work on finding a better teacher student match. Not all teachers or students are perfect matches...
Good Luck.
PS Try previewing lessons at different barns so that you can get an idea of one's teaching style before you lesson.

It sounds like everyone here needs to take a great big chill pill and relax. Horses can become really screwed up, both mentally and physically. But they can be fixed. My horse is a prime example. He is now 21 years old and he is my trainers main school horse for beginner children/adults to learn to ride and jump. Eight years ago he had been beaten so badly it cost my a few grand just to have his jaw realigned. My trainer worked on him for a few years and to make a long story short, he is the perfect gentleman and a school master.
You can tell immediately if horses are being severely abused/beaten just by watching them. They give off definate signs that they are abuse/mentally broken. This does not sound like the case here. What it sounds like is there is not a good fit between trainer and client. That happens sometimes and a new barn is in order for the client. The trainer needs to take the suspect horse out of schooling and retrain the horse. With patience it does work.
