I just found a nice horse.

His name is Caballo Rojo, he's a 15.3 8 year old chestnut Rocky Mountain gelding for $2,500. He's really cute, a good trail, and great with kids, which is basically what I need, just a nice reasonable gelding that I could trail ride and do 4-H with. I've already emailed the owner and asked if he would be good for a beginner and would go under English saddle.

This is him, Caballo Rojo! Tell me what you think, guys!

I think he's adorable, but just to let you know, Rocky Mountain Horses are gaited horses, not sure if you wanted a gaited breed or not.

Yes, I knew they were gaited, I read about it in a Horse Illustrated article. But, thanks for telling me, I probably would have forgot (being a blonde hehe).

Isn't he adorable though?

I also think it depends on the training. Sometimes, a Rocky Mountain horse isn't born in with the gait. They have to be trained to unlock the gait. If Caballo was used as just a trail horse/arena horse, then he may not have specific training for his distinct gaits. I don't know, though. The owner hasn't emailed me back yet  :(.

Thanks for your input he's such a lil' cutie.

He's a cutie! I *love* Rockies! They're great horses. Although, from my understanding their gait (which is called Daisy-Clipping) is inherient, not trained. Training only exaggerates the gait (for showing)...that's how I understand gaited horse training, anyway?
