I'm sorry. I don't know how to help. I live in Florida, and we don't have problems with the cold :[ Let us know how things go with the vet. Good luck.

Hi. I used to live in IL where it was like always cold. If it gets like freezing there you might want to try blanketing her. There are alot of joint supplements you can give her. Just go to the feed store and you can ask them about some or use MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) it helps with joints we give it to my 27 year old mare. Umm try rice bran also, it'll help her keep on weight through the cold and that could help with some of the pain. What's happening probably isn't just the cold, it's probably that she's old and it's harder for her to stay healthy while it's cold. How swollen are her legs because there's a virus that can make a horses legs swell up really bad.

Well molly got her x-rays. Her coffin bones shiftede. Only thing that can be done is to have her heel tirmed more, when her feet are trimed. and to give her bute every day...

Founder = Laminitis. Just another term for it.

ask you vet if you can try Recovery EQ. it helps rebuild the joints. the website is www.recoveryeq.com it is pretty expensive though, 2.2 pounds is 80 dollars. it helped two older horses at my barn that had arthritis and a pulled muscle, i dont know if it will help with a turned coffin bone though. um, jeffers has recovery now so if you get that catalog that is a place you can get it. also, if you are live near VA, which i dont know, i didnt look before i started writing this, there is a place called Serenity Equine where they specialize in founder cases.

Skip_in_hide ^^ founder is when a horse ingest too much carbohydrates (grain overload), grazing of lush pastures (especially in ponies), and excess exercice in an unfit horse. it disrupts the blood flow to the foot and can cause acute laminitis. if it isnt taken care of soon, the coffin bone can turn and come through the bottom of the foot. which can result in the whole hoof fallin off.

I think that if you are really concerned you should without hesitaion have a vet look at her. That being said, and again I am not a vet, per my expierence I might suggest something as simple as asprine say 10 a day for the inflamation and any discomfort that might be associated. As for the joint concern their is a supplement called MSN that is an oral medicaion spacifically used for joint health. You might look into that as well.

Good Luck. I know how challenging it can be to take care of older horses. Stay as educated as you can. And have your vet address any major concerns you might have.
