Elo Elo Te-Hee I Have Recently Rescued a Black ThouroughBread Mare Called Black Beauty But However The ILPH Said When You Are Riding You Need A Martingale Too Encorouge Her To Keep Her Head Up And When Jumping Use A Elastic Breastplate To Keep Her Saddle From Slipping (She Has Funny Withers & Shoulders) However When I Was taking Her Out On a Hack I Could Not Put The Martingale On  And I Felt Embarrassed Asking My Mum For Help But Then My Mum Saw Me Struggaling Too Put It On So She Gave Me Some Help. When We Was Hacking Out Though She Was A Bit Funny If You Catch My Drift She Was Wafing Her Head and Trying Too Bite The Martingale  ! So I Dismounted and Loosend It One Hole and Carried On. But In the Next 5 Minuites She Was Doing The Same Thing  ! So I Just Went For A Quick Canter And Then Dismounted and We Was Going Too Do Some Flatwork & Jumping. So I Put Her Breast Plate On And She Was Going Mad! But I Was Wondering If The Martingale Was Stiff Becouse It Was New Same With The Breastplate. What Do You Think?

Hello,

First off... I so appauld you for your horse rescue efforts...It is truly people like you that make the horse world a safer place to be... Your efforts are not thanked enough... The Martingale deliema? This being a training device... I might suggest that you not use it unless you feel you need it... This is designed not to keep a horses head up but to keep it down... You will see this used often in the hunter ring if only as a guidence point of refernce... It helps to encourage the horse not to invert comprimising their jumping style as well as their way of going.... It is ok not to use it if you feel that it is not necessary... As for the Breast Plate... A good idea if like you say he has a funny withers... This will only help in the saddle placement and in the worst case senierio keep from cuasing back soreness if in fact your saddle does slip back... Having said the latter... I would caution you to be very carefull on your saddle fit if he came with a warning... Good Luck... and keep up the good work...

PS one more thing on the martingale... I think you are speaking of a standing martingale... the correct fit is from the girth to the nose band... the excess should freely reach the throught latch when attached. Though having heard what you said... I am not sure you even need one.. Try a ride without... If he carries his head too high... then you might put it back on... This is one of the fun things in reguards to figuring out new horses... What they need... and why... I always see it as a project... how I can make them better.... but... having said that.... often times it takes me a couple of weeks to truly get on what i feel is the "right" path... Take your time... and make it a challenge... What fun... : )
