my yard is a small yard, ther are my 2 horses and 2 others with different owners. one owner hadly ever visits her horse, and has not paid any rent to the land owner in months.
now the other owner has been suspicious that her hay has been going down too fast, so she moved it in with my stuff, where it is locked away form the other owner.
now i have noticed that my hay net is being intied and done up again, i know exactly how i tye my haynet up- so the string will come free with one pull.

what the heck can i do? the 'bad' owner comes down late at night despite being at home all day - i pass her house on the way down and her car is always there. so i cant come down later than her. my horse is on a carefully regulated diet, so he does not get a lot of feed any how- and now he's getting even less. the yard owner won't do anything about it. and if i sak her she will obviously deny it.

i will be moving yards in a month or two, but i cant support an extra horse - ie hers, its expensive enough just keeping my two!!

i have thought about hiding in a nearby stable to catch her at it, but is this a bit extreme? i means getting the train down to hide the car and sitting in the dark in the middle of winter. but i don't see what else i can do!

Have you ever thought of this?

If you have a video camera, maybe hide it somewhere in your horse's stall (where he can't reach it, of course! :p ) and where the alleged thief won't spot it, either. If the stealing is occuring at night, turn on the night vision on the camera, if it has a thing like that. Make sure you put it at angle where you can see the person's face from the haynet. And don't let any see you do it, either! Then they'll know!

Check the camera each day (gotta leave it running) and if someone is stealing your hay, turn the tape into the police, and that will be your evidence.

Hope that helped.

Well I think you should possibly ask her if she noticed anyhting different about the place and see if it seems as if shes hiding something. Or just down right blurt out you think shes a theif lol... But you should talk to her about it before any thing else happens.

last winter she was stealing the farmer's straw - opening bales and taking the odd section here and there, and when asked about it denyed any knowledge of it, so she's well practiced. this is why asking her win't help. my mum suggested locking the haynet.
i already have to padlock my horse's stall gate cause off someone letting the horses out in the night in the summer (mine's a stallion, and we have a mare on the yard) .
i hate the fact that i even have to think aboput any of this crap. keeping horses isn't susopsed to be a constant battle agaings trespassers and theft!
or am i just being naieve?????

This situation sounds like a real bummer... My advise to you would be to get out of the situation as soon as possible... It is unfortunate that their is dishonest people in the world, but I don't see much positive coming in catching someone who already does not have a concious... Leave sooner than later...

Good Luck...
