Okay, I own a 3year old monster whom I love very dearly but he can be a pain sometimes. he doesn't move off of my leg to well so i ride him with a small pair of spurs. He actually does behave very nicely and is a very quite horse. But lately when i sit and ask him to canter he does a little buck or he kicks out or possibly even a crowhop from my spurs. It's so hard to tell when your on a 17hh horse...they all feel the same and I'm to worried about staying on to figure out what hes really doing. He never used to do this and I have always ridden him with spurs, I actually down sized my spurs since he was doing so well. But now he's doing this and I'm not sure how to correct it because this is happening at least twice a day now. What should i do to fix the error before I end up on the ground?

Well with a buck, his whole backend will come off the ground, with a kick, he'll probably only kick out with one leg, and a crowhop..I dunno how to describe it. I know how you feel though, I have the same problem with my 4 year old. I've been working him on the ground so he understands his cues before I get on his back. Good luck.

Dear "He is testing you,"
A kick out at the leg signifies what can be refered to as a sourness to the leg... It does not sound like you are doing anything to provolk this other than your horse sounding like he is not a fan of working... My advise would be to put a trainer on him as the curb this behavior before it carrys over into more severe disobiendence... (such as bucking and/or rearing in a worst case senerio) Bottom line is he is testing you and it is due time that you set the presedent.... If you don't have a trainer... I would ride him with a stick... If he offers to kick out at your leg... simply tap him with the stick.. He will probaly kick out at the stick as well... Keep tapping him... As to repremand him everytime he kicks out... No need to spank him hard... but just keep tapping him until he accepts this one form of disapline... This should start you on a journey of who is boss... Good luck... Be carefull... and again.. I do feel if you have a trainer it would well be worth a ride for them... This could be a very minor problem if handled correctly... Though vise vera could also turn into a real challenge if not handled soon...

Something I suggest might be to just push him until he's sweaty, you're out of breath and he stops acting like that. and DON'T UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET STOP ASKING HIM TO CANTER AND LET HIM TROT!! lol..just had to emphasize that! If you let him trot after he has misbehaved, he'll just be getting what he wants. Plus, horses have to slow down to buck so if you just keep kicking him and pushing him forward, than he'll have to go. There is no possible way for him to escape your legs except for MOVING FORWARD!!!!!! Emphasizing again!! lol. That's my advice! :D

And a crowhop is basically all four legs coming off the ground with their back hunched up ending in a HUGE buck!! Good luck :D
