Hi, I want to switch my horses over to a different feed. One thats cheaper and its a lot better for them. Well I know that its best to switch them over gradually, but does anyone know how long to do half n half?
Thanks for any help!!

I had to switch Wes's feed when I got him. I think the entire process is done over a period of a week, so I would only think half and half would be for a couple of days.

I don't know how much help this is but when we switched we added a quarter scoop to the old feed reducing that by a quarter. We went with that for about a half of a week. Then we went with half and half or rather we just mixed both bags together in a big tub (we had twenty some horses) for about a week. Then we finished the rest of that week with three quarters of the new and one quarter of the old. It spanned over a two week time period. It can be dangerous switching too fast and even two weeks may not have been enough for some horses. Hope this helps. :)

I think most importantly we need to know what you are switching from, and what to? What is is cheaper?... and why is is better? What feeding regimen has he been on... and for how long? If you would disclose his entire feeding program before, meaning up until this point, and what you will want it to become I think we will all have a better and more educated answer for you... You are definitely on the right track that this is very important... but again... Give us all the information that is much needed and that you have in order to obtain the best possible individualize feeding program for both you and your horse...

I've always been told that you need to switch feed over a period of two weeks. I wouldn't start at half & half. I'd start with 1/4 new to 3/4 old for a few days, then to 1/2 and 1/2, then 3/4 new to 1/4 old the to 100% new.

Good luck!!

Im not sure if you can get a certain supplement in america called pink powder. It aids diet changes and if your horse doesnt take too well it aids the digestive process. It allows you to swicth the foods over faster but with out making your horse ill. I had to use it when my horse started living out all year round. It worked a treat.
