My horse scrubs soooo much in the summer, in the winter her mane and tail start growing back and looking beautiful but by summertime she scrubs it all off. her mane and tail are also pretty dry and I found one shampoo and spray that seems to work pretty well (Premier Rehydrant Shampoo and Spray by Equus) but any other suggestions would be appreciated. ;)

it might itch because of a fungus. Try McNasty anti-fungal spray.

It sounds like summer itch. Do you fly spray her everyday?

Im pretty sure my horse just scrubs because she's bored, although she seems to have a dandruff problem so I clean her mane and tail almost weekly in the summer. Since I've done that it seems to help especially if I use Gold Nugget Anti-Fungal Shampoo or the Premier Rehydrant Shampoo by Equus. MTG worked well but it caused more damage than good, at least in our barn's horses. The oil in the MTG caused sun damage and breakage of the hair.

Just a thought,
We use EQ Solutions. It is naturally based and you can use it on horses, people, and little animals. We haven't had any itching problems in our horses or anything. If it's fungus we just bathe them and bath them again in a certain thing that I forget what it's called, I'll find out and tell you. Also, be careful when treating fungus or ring worm, you can get it and pass it to other horses. It might be a good idea to search for Fungus in horses, or itching problems in horses, on the internet. Hope this helps!!

You should really try Calm Coat. MY horse as the same thing and I tried every thing and it worked the best.

Keep it clean, but not too clean. Even moisturizing shampoo will irritate if she is bathed too frequently. After you wash it, put some regular yellow listerine in a spray bottle and apply some... sometimes it helps with the itching.

tail wrap her tail or they sell these things that go on the tail so when she rubs on them she isnt hurting the hair

I know this sounds wierd but rub fresh garlic cloves into the rots of her mane and tail. It wil stink but i have a welsh section c youngster n he's a devil for rubbing. Try a medicated shampoo too. Hibiscrub should do the trick just fine :)

Another good tip is to use tea tree oil spray. Squirt it on the base of the mane and tail, and rub it (gently!) into the skin a little. Works wonders

Research will go far for you, I found this information at thehorse.com under the tail rubbing article.
The guilty culprit in some cases of tail rubbing is the pinworm (Oxyuris equi); this is not always the case. Other reasons horses rub the hair off their tails include the following: insect hypersensitivity, food allergy, pediculosis (lice infestation), mange, or in rare cases a behavioral vice much like cribbing.
Treatment for tail rubbing due to pinworms is simple--institute a regular deworming program. A regular deworming program will nearly always rid your horse of the parasites that cause tail rubbing. Dewormers such as ivermectin, benzimidazoles, moxidectin, or pyrantel pamoate are available and will eradicate these parasites.
