Hi all! I'm new, just joined today. I have a beautiful, sweet 14 year old Hanoverian mare who is the light of my life! She is by far the sweetest horse I've ever known! She came from a home where she was being badly abused, whipped for every little "mistake". I've had her for about 6 months now and the change in her is wonderful. I took time over the winter just to get to know her, get her trust and just put the weight back up on her. She had been about 200 lbs underweight when I got her. I've recently started riding her and she is an absolute pleasure to ride. She's been trained in jumping, eventing & dressage. I don't want to jump her anymore so I'm looking at maybe riding in dressage with her. Whatever I decide to do, I'm just so thrilled to have her. She's so funny, she'll follow me around the pasture & stable area like a puppy. :)

I put some pictures of her in my profile. :D She is my princess, I adore her. Her bloodlines & conformation & show record are good enough that I've decided either this season or next spring I'm going to breed her, I've found the stud I want to use, I just need to make sure she's healthy enough and has recovered from being so neglected & abused. I won't breed her until that point, I won't jeopardize her for a foal. :)

Thank you! She is still under weight about 50 to 75 lbs, but we're getting there. Part of the problem has been where she is currently boarded, they keep switching her feed so I'm moving her on the 30th to a new facility where I buy the feed. A bit more of a hassle, but at least that way I'm in control of her feed. Plus, the place we're at now got mad at me for "micro managing" my horse and they don't "allow" that. So a friend & I are moving our horses together. :)
Baylee is so funny in that she is the only horse I've ever known who doesn't like sweets. She absolutely hates peppermint candies and sugar cubes, although she loves the peppermint horse treats, as well as the black licorice ones. LOL But she is my baby, we bonded from the moment we met and it has just continued to get stronger as time goes by. She bucked the woman who neglected & abused her off, breaking her collar bone, but with me it would take something really serious to make her buck or do anything wrong. She's the type of horse who'd rather hurt herself than deliberately hurt me, with the exception of occassionally stepping on my foot. :D Heck, I put a 4 year old on her back bare back & lead her and she was just the perfect little angel.

Wow she sounds REALLY sweet!! Yeah and I would move stables if I were you too! Good luck...I suggest nutrena feeds. They really helped our horses. :D
Good Luck moving your horses!

She is, she's the sweetest horse I've ever owned.
She is currently eating Equine Senior. At the current boarding facility she only gets turned out to pasture about once a week. The new place she'll be out daily, but they have round bales in the pasture with the horses, so hopefully she'll stop running all over the place and eat hay. She's a good horse. Found out from the people who had her before the girl that abused her that when Baylee wasn't showing or in training for shows, she was used as a lesson horse, she is just that calm. That really helped me learn to trust her, since before that I didn't know much about her.
Does anyone know of any Equine Senior feed that has little to no sweet in it? If Baylee has one flaw, it is that she goes nuts on sweet, she gets VERY hot on it. As we move into the summer months, I'd like to find her something that won't make her so hot.
Thanks!

Are you giving her senior just to build weight? If you are, I would suggest switching to Calf Manna... it is high in calories but won't make her too hot, and you can feed about half the amount that you were feeding senior. I have one mare who is a hard keeper and she's only been on it for a short time, and she plumped right up :) Hopefully this helps... BTW, I'm new too :D

It's not just to switch weight as it to maintain. I had built her weight up before, then weaned her off that feed onto a new one and she dropped *all* the weight she had put on. I'll check into the Calf Manna, with summer coming up and being in Texas, I'd rather her not get hot off her feed. And I'm all for having to feed less feed, means I'd have to buy it less often.
Thanks for the tip!!
