My six-year-old Paint mare had a lump under her "chin" like right where the noseband of a bridle would rest. I have had the vet out and she took blood from it to make sure it wasn't strangles or anything like that. The tests came back negative so now we are dumbfounded as to what this could be. About a week ago I found that it had leaked pus. No one has any clue as to what this could be so I figured maybe someone on here might know....please help....

Make sure its not a tick. some times they get up under the skin.
don't know any thing about it, but somone else posted something about a bone infection. could that be it???
Hope it's not serious

I was the one who posted about bone infections.
If it's leaking pus, and it doesn't heal, it could very well become a bone infection. My suggestion (my vet suggested this to me for my horse, who has a similar problem on the side of his head) would be to clean it and irrigate it (use a suringe, but without a needle, and get it up into the wound) and flush it with betadine for 30 days. If it heals on it's own, then you'll be fine, if not, call your vet, it could be a bone infection.
Keep us updated.

It's not leaking anymore. It only leaked once because I guess the bump decided to pop....

ya....i think it was an abcess....the bump is much smaller than it was so I guess that means it's healing....

have you ever heard of sarcoids. if the skin is broken camerosa ointment is really good for lumps and bumps. if not it good be a bite of some sort or maybe a sore.

I worked in an equine vet clinic for 2 years and I have seen this. First question, is this lump hard like bone or more of a cist? If it's a soft lump, then you might have some kind of cist starting and I'd have your vet explore it more. If it's a hard lump I would check the mare's teeth. You didn't say how old she is, but often times in a young horse, the caps will not come off of their teeth fully and it will cause their teeth to start growing the wrong direction, causing infections and the leaky puss as you mentioned. Have your vet check her teeth and see if this is the case.
I hope you find out what it is! Let us know hon!
